Tender & Fragrant: World’s “Pickiest” Bunny Loves It
After 3 years of trying multiple brands and types of hay, not to mention 100’s of dollars, I ran across High Desert Timothy Hay. If you don’t know already, Timothy hay should make up about all of a bunny’s diet for the best health of your bunny (according to most rabbit experts and vets). When I was left with my son’s bunny I knew nothing about bunny’s and the hay he came with looked pretty unappetizing to me. Not knowing better I started picking clover and dandelions from the neighborhood to give him. He ravished the greens. Soon he stopped eating hay. In a desperate attempt to switch him to hay, I began buying different brands and also different types of hay. The only hay he would eat was Alfalfa hay. (Completely my fault) He got fat, and developed all sorts of gastric problems. With the help of a vet that specializes caring for rabbits, his digestive system was restored but his diet included various fresh greens she recommended and Timothy hay. I went back to sampling various brands of Timothy hay, even the special ‘3rd cut’ hay. The problem was consistency between orders and even in the same box at times. I just ran across this brand about 2 months ago. I started with the smallest package. I was pleasantly surprised. Most of the hay was the tender parts, no to very little dust or dirt (even at the bottom of the box), at least 75% nice color green, fragrant, and the hay was layered and consistent. Buppy (my rabbit’s name), nibbled on it and ate it in between his fresh green ‘salads’. I slowly cut back on fresh greens. I was hesitant to order the next largest box, but the value compared to the small package was silly not to try. I just received the 4lb box. It came the very next day! I was anxious to open it and thrilled that is was packed with the same high quality of the smaller previous box. I still pick out some of the larger straw like sticks, but they’re much fewer than other brands (including ‘top name’). I do that because he about lost an eye from getting poked when he ate. I just opened it and put a little in his ‘dish’ and he took right to it! I highly recommend this and especially so if you have a picky eater! I hope that it continues to be the great hay that I’ve recently experienced. 1st Picture is top of box and the 2nd picture is in the middle layers.

This is PERFECT
Before buying this, I didn't think that there was a huge difference between hay suppliers. Second cutting is second cutting, right? I was so wrong! I used to use Kaytee or VitaKraft because it was cheap and easy to find in stores or online, but decided that I wanted to shop around. I landed on High Desert after comparing prices, sizes of containers, and ability to subscribe and save. Opening that first box was just a jaw-dropping difference in quality compared to the "name brands". This hay looks and feels fresh, it's soft, it smells good, and there's very few (if any) thick stems. My piggies devoured it and I seriously felt like I'd been depriving them. They eat 100% of this hay from their hay rack, which is awesome considering how much of the other brands they left behind (too thick/hard stems). In their hay bin, they love playing around in this hay, digging through for foraged items I hide for them, and napping in it (really, it's that soft and fluffy), whereas with the other brands they just used the top layer. There is almost no shake/powdery bits at the bottom of this box either. I have this on subscribe and save and get a four pound box monthly which is the perfect amount. I have 3 guinea pigs, and they have hay bins to play/nest in as well as hay racks to feed from. I use a plastic container with a lid to transfer half the box into for easy refilling and then stow the cardboard box with other backup supplies until needed. I seriously cannot say enough good things about High Desert. I wish I would have found out about them sooner! I feel good knowing I'm supporting a smaller farm, the quality is leaps and bounds ahead of the big name brands, and this is sincerely a quality product.

Your little buddies want this hay!
Okay, here's the scoop. My girlfriend bought a guinea pig, which I thought was a lame idea for a pet. Two weeks later, that guinea pig was my best buddy, and for 6.5 yrs now I've gone to extraordinary lengths to give him only the best. Early on I bought hay from S.P.S., and he loved it -- mostly for the abundant fuzzy flower heads ("fuzzies") which any piggie knows are the best, most important part. After a year, their hay quality drastically dropped, which they said was due to losing their Timothy hay supplier in Nevada. I tried other premium brands, but after 4 or 5 yrs found nothing he liked as much. He'd usually just sniff the fuzzies, then turn his head away in disgust. Then last spring I found this high desert hay from NEVADA! I contacted them, and learned that the farm that grows their Timothy hay (which is owned by close family friends of theirs) is the farm that used to supply S.P.S. back when their hay was truly great -- so I ordered some. The first time I filled Chili Bean's hopper with it and gave him a nice long fuzzy, he actually squealed with happiness! Then he looked at me with a look that said "it's about time!". So this hay has the official endorsement of my cranky, very picky and spoiled pig who knows quality hay, even after not having it for 4+ years. Don't make your piggies wait that long!

HORRIBLE!
This hay was HORRIBLE! All it is is 4 pounds of dried out sticks. There is NO soft leafy hay in here at all! My guinea is 7 years old and would risk hay poke if I put this in her cage! Dull, barely green and has no fresh aroma AT ALL! I would have given ZERO stars but the minimum allowed is 1.

Great product! Best customer service!!
I had ordered a large amount of grass first time in March and it was awesome. Very fresh and green. Grass smelled amazing ! Second order I made in June was a smaller batch. This one Not so great. Some dead brown Patches all throughout And smelled different. Contacted High Desert and made my complaint. Customer service immediately responded and were professional and courteous. A few days later I received more grass than I purchased as a replacement. Still not as great as the first large batch that I bought in March But it must be the time of the year playing it’s part. Anyway very satisfied with High Desert and their product but mainly their customer service in this case. I will definitely continue to purchase from them in the future. Thank you High Desert!

Initially impressed, now disappointed.
So let me preface this by saying I used to get all my hay from Rabbit Hole Hay but their quality declined as well as the time it took to arrive I was often forced to buy from the pet store. I have two very picky buns who are particular about their hay choices so I set out to find a new hay supply. The first two boxes I bought of this hay I was so impressed. It was a beautiful green, smelled so fresh and my buns couldn’t get enough! There was almost no dust, very few stems and very little brown leaves. I understand that brown leaves can be unavoidable at times so I don’t have the expectation that there will never be brown leaves. Recently I ordered two more 8lb boxes so I can keep stocked up. I have a container made specifically for hay so I can keep it as fresh as possible. As you’ll see in the photo it arrived with a bunch of brown hay that is clumped together, very little soft green leaves and a bunch of stems and dust. There is also a good amount of very thin almost wirey and curled up hay that actually resembled long field grass. That’s the only way I can think to describe it. I’ve had to sort through both boxes to find suitable hay that my buns will eat because they will not touch the majority of what is there. I thought the first box of the two I recently ordered may have just been a one off type of thing, but the second box was exactly the same as the first. Maybe for others what is seen in the photo isn’t as bad as what they’ve seen but it seemed unusual and was disappointing based on the first couple boxes I got. While I may give them another try because I am hoping I don’t have to again set out to find a good hay source, I’m not gonna lie and say I’m not hesitant.

High Quality Hay the Pickiest Bunnies Will Love!
I am so grateful I found this hay! I have a very picky bun who refused to eat all other brands I tried. He immediately loved this hay and after 3 years, he still eats it well. One of the things I noticed is this brand is much higher quality. It's green, has the right texture, and smells good, which is very important. Other brands I tried were dry and yellow, without any smell. I'm also impressed that the quality of this hay hasn't diminished with time like others have.
