Syd Barrett: A Very Irregular Head

Still working on finishing the whole book. Am taking it in chunks and absolutely loving it so far!! The reviews I've read for this book state that it's the most authentic biography and I would definitely with them. It's an easy 5 stars. It's written in an enjoyable fashion for reading, as biographies can often feel choppy. If you are a fan of Syd, read this book.

Bien que réserve aux anglophones, il décrit bien le décrochage de Syd du pink Floyd, en ne le schématisant pas à un simple trip d'acide de trop, mais en décrivant le rejet de Syd de cette approché commerciale du Floyd, trop différente des visions artistiques.

I loved Robs book from the very start. I enjoyed reading about a man who could have certainly be one of the top 5 or 6 legends of the sixties music scene. Before I became better acquainted witness Syd Barrett I assumed that he was either living in an asylum or perhaps his mothers house. The info received made me think that Syd was totally bonkers and were alive only by the grace of Pink Floyd! My o my that info was certainly scatterbrained by the time I received it as is the case more than not. After reading Robs book it became clear to me that as the driving and only legitimate force behind Floyd he was pushed out. Personally, I don't think that he ever recovered from that It's true that Gilmore and Waters are not only great musical artists they are also power hungry to the 10th degree. They've admitted that fact. Syd needed some help and direction that he NEVER got as nobody in that band was going to slow done a bit to help anyone. That is a regretful decision that they made as a band. Yes, they produced a couple of very good, although not great, albums. Led by Waters they became mega stars and multi millionaires good for them as they deserved it. But can you imagine what Syd would have come forth with if given the same amount of time. No contest at all. He would have blown everybody away! He was that good Getting back to the book I found many details of which I was not aware of. I do believe that Mr. Chapman stayed true to his objective of being objective and I commend him for it Buy the book!!! You'll be glad you did

ich bin schon lange ein grosser fan von syd barretts musik und habe viel über ihn gelesen. chapmans buch über roger bzw. syd barrett ist die definitive und mit abstand beste biografie. er hatte zugang zu seinen tagebüchern etc. und den support der familie. andere bücher über das tragische genie wiederholen die gängigen acid storys, die so gar nicht stimmen, wie chapman sehr nachvollziehbar darstellt. man kommt hier dem menschen roger barrett näher, der vom mythos des durch zuviel lsd wahnsinnig gewordenen stars lange verdeckt wurde. eine stärke des buches ist es, den damaligen popkulturellen kontext sehr anschaulich aufzuzeigen, den beginn der psychedelischen bewegung, zu der natürlich auch lsd und magic mushrooms gehörten. wie robyn hitchcock richtig sagt: man sollte sich an syd wegen seiner wunderbaren musik erinnern, nicht wegen crazy lsd storys. klar, syd kam aus der spur und das bis an das ende seines lebens. klar, ohne lsd wäre es wohl so krass nicht passiert aber es gibt noch andere gründe, die chapman aufzeigt und syd war bis ende der 60er jahre wohl besser beieinander, als die bekannten storys vermuten liessen, er hat in dieser zeit noch viele wunderbare songs komponiert und grossartige gigs bis zu seinem ende bei pink floyd gespielt, auch war er bei der usa tournee, die immer als disaster dargestellt wurde, zwar nicht besonders gut drauf, aber nicht das komplette psychische wrack. chapman belegt alles, was er schreibt und wiederholt nicht zum x mal irgendwelche storys, er zeigt, dass viele so nicht stimmen. das buch ist vorbildlich recherchiert, nutzt sehr viele quellen wie z.b. syds tagebücher, ehemalige schulfreunde usw. kommen zu wort, menschen, die syd bzw. roger wirklich kannten. ich bin herrn chapman sehr dankbar, dass er uns den menschen roger barrett näherbringt, mit missverständnissen aufräumt und sein werk angemessen würdigt. das ganze liest sich zudem wunderbar und flüssig, chapman ist ein guter erzähler. wir tauchen mit ihm in die frühpsychedelische ära im swinging london ein, in die höhen und tiefen abgründe von syds geist und seele. alle die ihn kannten, waren von dem charismatischen menschen fasziniert, der licht versprühte und sich mit seiner musik unsterblich machte, in den herzen vieler menschen weltweit wird er weiterleben.... shine on, syd.

Sempre affascinato dal mito di Syd Barrett ho voluto saperne di piu'. Il libro (anche se scritto in un inglese non semplicissimo da seguire) offre una visione completa della Londra psichedelica degli anni 60 indicandone usi e costumi e descrivendo la vita di Syd oltre le solite banalita' di eccessivo consumo di acidi e offrendo una visione a mio avviso completa dell'uomo e dell'artista.
