Water you can drink.
The local water is heavily chlorinated and tastes yucky. This ceramic and carbon filter cleans up that chlorine and the water tastes great. Be aware that the flow rate is significantly reduced but, for me, the clean taste is a game winner. Doulton is the best.👍👍👍

works well if you know how to use it
I am using this kind of filter since 2009. We have a house in the Dominican Republic. The water we drink comes from an river, gets pumped up to the roof imto a tank and then we have a doulton countertop filter that uses this cartridge. We clean the cartrige every 5 weeks and change it more or less every 8 months. The manufacturer recommends every 6 months but that depends on the amount of filtering you do.Here some suggestions after almost 15 years with this system:1. when you change the cartridge, put some chlorine into the hole where you screw this cartridge in, and let it in there for about 2 minutes. so you are sure you have a clean system from the cartridge to where the filtered water comes out.2. you can clean the outside of this ceramic cartridge with a soft brush or dish sponge. but when you do it, either you keep it screwed in, so no bacteria gets from the cartridge into the hole where the cartridge was stewed in, or you do the same steps as described in point one. Be very careful with that cleaning step. wear gloves because wha is on the filter is not only particles but also bacteria.3. Very important: when you cleaned or replaced the cartridge, you have to fill the covering that goes over the cartridge with water, otherwise the air will impede filtering. so you have to hold the whole system upside down and screw the covering filled with water over the cartridge.I hope that helps ;-)

Good for NYC water
This is a good filter for NYC water. My concerns are removing sediment and chlorine and any potential lead that might come from the pipes in my house, and possible bacteria, although that is rare in NYC tap water. The filter removes a lot of other stuff too - it is described on the company website. It is easy to clean the sediment from the white ceramic outer filter and the activated charcoal part is inside. The flow rate is pretty good. I am not aware of a better countertop system. If you have a seriously contaminated water supply or a high level of water paranoia (like General Buck Turgidson in Dr. Stragelove) you should study different filter options carefully. For me, this filter returns NYC tap water to the sweet mountain spring water that, without the chlorine and sediment, it actually is.

Extensive Research Indicated Doulton Was Still The Best For Us - Removes Local Water Chlorine Smell - Makes Water Tastes Great
We have had a water filtration system for a great many years that use this specific filter cartridge. Our public water system often has a heavy chlorine smell that is evident when you wash your hands, run water for dishes, bath, etc.. Thankfully, this filter removes all evidence of the chlorine smell and makes the water taste great. The generic Doulton filtration system was no longer supported and our 15 year old system began leaking at the base and no one makes the particular gasket, so after much online research into both Doulton and other brand filters we decided to go with a Doulton Brand direct rather than a generic. Thankfully, the new unit uses the same UltraCarb Ceramic filter and Amazon has the best prices for the cartridges anywhere.

Strange tasting water
I have been ordering these filters for 7 or 8 yrs. They have always been fine. The last one I ordered in June of 2025 has made the water taste awful. Tastes like bleach or chlorine...

GREAT WATER FROM A CERAMIC DILDO
8/14- Been using the SuperCarb for the last 8 years. I am sorta a water snob, and my tap water thru this filter is the best damn water I drink anywhere. Not sure why this UltraCarb is $15. cheaper than a SuperCarb. Seems like it should cost more, so I'm going to try it now. Oh, BTW, I live 3 miles from the water treatment plant which is 1/4 mile from the reservoir. We have pretty good water even without this filter. Will update my review if I find a difference in taste or longevity.UPDATE 9/16/14- This UltraCarb has definitely got a slightly slower GPM flow than a SuperCarb. Not a big deal, but it is noticeable. Oddly, my water doesn't taste quite as good with this UltraCarb than when I use a SuperCarb. My water sorta tastes a little "sour" to me. The way I form this unscientific opinion is by an A/B comparison by drinking Dasni Water, which I find to be very full-bodied and a consistent tasting water. Usually my SuperCarb filtered water is on par with Dasani for taste. This UltraCarb definitely is lacking in taste comparitively. If I can find SuperCarbs for a reasonable price ($40 or so) I will be buying them from now on.
