Q: The chipboard around the hinges has broken will this cover the damage and give me something to fit the hinges to

This will cover the damage and hinges will fit on the plate as there is a hole. However it didn’t fit mine as the product don’t have the right measure hole on the plate to screw on so my purchase was wasted. Wouldn’t recommend these ones

Q: Does the hinge fix to the plate or do you need to have timber behind it

The hinge fits directly onto the plate

Q: Can this only be used where the door part is broken? It's the cupboard wall part that I need to repair.

I used it for my cupboard wall part being broken also. It initially did the job, however over time it became loose. The door is still attached but not perfectly.
