Do they have a chemical smell?

No smell whatsoever. Even when very hot items are placed on them.

How do these compare with safe grabs? They are a lot cheaper in price.

I never had Safe Grabs, but these are quite sturdy and textured. I am very happy with them. Was afraid they would be too thin, but are a good thickness

We just remodeled our kitchen and put in granite countertops z. I bought 2 sets of 4 of these trivets so I have 8 of them and I stack 2 trivets for hot pots and I am happy with the results. If I have a large pot I’ll put 2 stacks (stacks of 2) side by side so that a larger surface is covered. Hope this helps.

I'm getting a new wood table so trying to be extra careful. Will this be enough to protect the table if I'm putting something straight from the oven?

I don't have this exact set, but the walfos rectangular trivets that I have are very much heat resistant to my granite countertops. No damage at all. I'm very pleased with this purchase.
