Fonio, super grain
This is a great grain. It has iron, zinc, vitamin B one and B6. I’m a southern girl. I ate grits as a child, it didn’t have the iron in the other vitamins. I think this is the best grain to eat. It also keeps you full.

Simple and straightforward goodness in a world mired in complexities.
Quite possibly the fastest and easiest grain to cook up of them all---combine that with the potent protein and it being essentially either about as apt to pair with anything as the likes of sushi rice or oddly enough able to pinch hit for grits/polenta/etc better than makes any sense and you've got yourself a winner. I also appreciated this incarnation not needing any straining or sifting upon soaking unlike some prior tilts at Fonio have. In a better world, the likes of this would be ubiquitous on the shelves as it absolutely does the job and does it well---but given the world we still dwell in, at least now I know it can be had here at a good value going forward.

Rancid smell and taste
After many hours of research, I decided on this brand. To my disappointment when I opened the bag it smelt rancid and there was some small black specs in it. I washed it throughly and cooked it hoping that was a feature of the product pre washing. Nothing changed. It tasted rancid. This is ridiculous after paying so much money for it. SMH The sad thing is that these things aren't returnable.

OH my word - delish
This is the hands-down BEST breakfast cereal alternative - protein, Gluten Free, no need for milk even: 1/4 c Fonio grain (they're teeny tiny, but absorb a LOT of liquid) 1 c apple cider (or you can use water here too and maybe maple syrup for sweetener - with cider you need nothing else - 100% cider is TOO sweet for us 1c water I like to toast the grain first in dry pan, then combine with the cider/water and the following: Chopped candied ginger (2T?) ~ same amount both dried currants (nice and smaller than raisins) and unsweetened dried cranberries ( sold here in ~ 3 oz pkgs but that 's a lot - they are chopped so I don't need to) and not sticky like regular "dried" cranberries with sugar. I get that to boiling on Hi and turn to low to simmer till desired consistency. But watch it - the little buggars will stick otherwise. We add chopped nuts just before serving and you can use milk or half-and-half if you make it a bit thicker. Enjoy!

old or just how it tastes?
this is my first experience with fonio - thought it might make a prediabetes friendly breakfast option (will try later as a couscous sub). my bag arrived in timely manner in good condition, within expiration date. however, open opening it does have a slightly rancid odor, and tastes slightly off as well when cooked. whether this bag is “bad” (very fragile due to its nutrient content?), or just the way it smells/tastes i do not know. it is not inedible, just not fully delicious. will see what the cgm says about how i tolerate it.

An Oatmeal Alternative .... every morning!
Easy to cook and enjoy. Cook it just like cream of wheat or cream of rice. Add flax/blueberries, monk fruit/banana and a little pea protein powder and you have the perfect balanced meal with complete protein (pea), omega 3 fats (flaxseed), fiber/antioxidants (blueberry/banana) and just a bit of sweetness (monk fruit). Now top that! Also LOW oxalate and safe for interstitial cystitis patients. Wow. Tastes a little nutty ---- takes on the flavor of anything you put in it. Try other combinations.

FONIO IS A SUPERFOOD FOR ME
Fonio is a superfood for me according to my SWAMI GenoType3 which incorporates my Opus 23. I can't buy it in local markets so this is convenient for me to receive it from Amazon.

I’ve never tried Fonio before but kept coming across it randomly on social media as a great alternative to couscous and quinoa, which I use. But this one is more healthier, it’s much lighter than I thought as the picture shows the grains a little more bigger than they are. The grains are very small, which is still great. Fonia has an earthy/ground taste, it really doesn’t bloat, it looked like it cooks up small but once on the plate, it’s more than enough. I haven’t tried another brand, but seems to very good quality.

Hopefully a substitute for rice - but it is very fine-grained so can easily become a stodgy ball. Needs timed preparation - and some seasoning! I'm trusting that it's a really healthy purchase.
