in a short book like this it feels unnecessary
I found this book disappointing. I was looking forward to learning more about Native American environmentalism, but instead I got a selective survey of literary, cinematic, and other representations of Native American interactions with nature. Reading the book, you will learn very little about actual Native American environmental activism, or even about Native American writing on the topic of environmentalism. To be fair, the book jacket does indicate that the book is "an analysis of parks and wilderness areas, gardens and gardening, and indigenous approaches to land as expressed in contemporary art, novels, and historical writing." However, too much of this book is taken up with discussions of white writers' representations of Native Americans. While there would be room for that in a longer and more comprehensive work, in a short book like this it feels unnecessary. The title ought to be "A Discussion of What Some White and Native People Have Said About Native Americans and Nature."
