Still a good storyI loved
I loved these as a child so offered it to our six year old who is a big reader. She loved it and we're getting more of the series. I like the fact that it refers back to a time where a group of children could have an adventure together, without recourse to health and safety rules, cash or technology.

A trip down memory lane.
I bought my 8 year old grandaughter this book to see if she enjoyed it as much as I used to as a child. She was engrossed in it and could recite the story to me as she progressed further into the book. I found a great sense of pride and comfort knowing I had passed on these stories to another generation. I will be getting the whole set now for her . Priceless.....

Bring back the original
I give it four stars because the book is new immaculate condition just like the seller had described it.BUT i was disappointed to find out this book is a censored version of the original.I have the entire Five collection that dates back to my childhood, they belong to the 1984 publication.Somehow the first book of the collection got lost,so i was eager to replace it.I honestly would have preferred to replace it with an original printing,in order to match the rest of my collection. It s s still ok of course, better than nothing, but frankly i don t understand why censor these books,i loved reading them over and over again as a child, and they had never struck me as being inapropriate or "incorrect" in any way.....this kind of censorship strikes me in no way as being socially or politically"progressive",it rather appears as a regression back to the Middle Ages,a kind of Witch Hunt.....

Its a shame we're not trusted with the original text, but it's still a good story.
”Queer”, in the sense of strange or unusual has been excised completely. Just in case any one mistook it for something LGBTQIA+ related (heaven forfend!). Other choices are equally queer, with "shorts" being replaced by "jeans" for example.Despite that, it's still a ripping yarn, and just as exciting as when i read it for the first time in my rather distant youth. So, only another 20 books to go and I'll have finished the whole set :-)

Famous Five 70th Anniversary Edition
It is the mark of a great story that can stand the test of time. I absolutely adored The Famous Five stories when I was young and I'm thrilled to say that nothing has changed upon reading these classic stories again many years later. This particular paperback edition of Five on a Treasure Island marks the 70th Anniversary and supports the House of Illustration with five of the Famous Five novels earning a cover-art makeover. The cover illustration has been done by Quentin Blake, known for his Roald Dahl illustrations, and the artwork looks superb. While the tale itself is simplistic and the language is a little old-fashioned it is still a charming and captivating story that brings back feelings of nostalgia whilst reading. It is the first in The Famous Five series and follows Julian, Dick, Anne, George and Timmy the dog on their adventures. It is a story worth having in your collection and this edition looks fantastic - I really hope that future generations will appreciate these timeless stories.

Bought for 9 year old girl
Bought for 9 year old girl.I am not sure how much she enjoyed this because I haven't received any feedback unlike other books I gave her at the same time.I thought she would enjoy it because she likes dogs (Timmy).I prefer the original illustrations.

A classic but with a single child family warning
The original text and character names which is great but not with the original illustrations. The old text though comes with a warning - there is a real bias here against single child families. George's issues and behavioural problems are all blamed on her being an only which obviously gave her these negative qualities! I read to my son and skipped these statements otherwise he might feel there's something wrong with being an only child.
