Great lens at a reasonable price.
Took this on vacation recently. While it's a little bulky (expected), it's lightweight, easy to use, works great. The image quality, image stabilization, and both auto-focus and manual focus are excellent. Everything works smoothly. Great option for any of Canon's APS-C mirrorless R series cameras. I believe it works on the full-frame versions too, but with a cropped image size since it's designed for the APS-C models.

An excellent light weight long range telephoto zoom at a great price
It's not fast but I'm NOT using film with a fixed speed and my camera goes up to ISO 100k or so making the small maximum aperture only of concern if I have shots where I care about lower depth of field. It's extremely light and about twice the maximum focal length and a third of the weight of of a faster 70-210mm I also own. Given that I have a 2x converter as well the Canon 100-400mm operates for me between 100mm and 800mm. I got it very cheap due to a Canon discount and a work bonus but given the picture results I've had, it was easily worth it at the discounted price alone. Long range landscape shots like high mountain positions are excellent and either the low weight, stabilization or both make for sharp shots at long range even when hand held. With my 2x converter it completely fills the gap between a 24-105mm and an 800mm super telephoto instead of leaving the gap I have remaining with an existing 70-210mm zoom. I'm very happy with my Canon 100-400mm f5.6-8.

Long reach and light weight
I bought this lens to go with my new Canon R7. Or maybe I bought the R7 to go with this lens? I really wanted a lighter weight lens and camera for carrying with me when hiking or birding. My 6d / 100-400mm F4-5.6 IS L (Mark 1) was too heavy to carry around my neck for hours. I got a Sony RX10 mark IV bridge camera which was a great size and weight, but the picture quality was not as good as I wanted. This lens and body combo is hopefully the answer to my problems. The lens itself is pretty impressive in terms of its length and weight. Sure, I wish it were shorter, but for 400mm, I can't really complain. I also wish it had a wider aperture, but for the lower price and weight, that is obviously the compromise you have to make. The sensor noise performance of the R7 eliminates some of the downside of the slow lens, but it can't help create the nice background blur that a fast lens will have. The image stabilization combo of the lens and body works exceptionally well. I have been getting sharp shots at 400mm with 1/250s handheld with my shaky hands. Images look crisp to me and autofocus is very fast and quiet. One thing I have not gotten used to is the zoom ring works backwards from every other lens I have. Maybe someday I will get used to it, but for now, every time I try to use it I start with rotating it the wrong way. On the plus side, there is no zoom creep when I am walking around with this lens around my neck. There is a lock where you can fix it at 100mm, but I have never had to use it. I am a little disappointed there is no weather sealing on this lens. I'd have paid a little more to have some basic weather sealing on it as I don't want to have to worry about using it in mist or rain. I'm not taking any stars off for those items that disappoint me about this lens as they are either compromises for size and weight, or were known limitations when I bought the lens and not a surprise. Overall, 5 stars as I am very happy carrying this lens around for hours taking bird photos.

Great lens for high school track / field and daytime soccer!
Who/ What: I paired this with my R10 and am now barely out of the newb phase (bought 10 months ago). I bought this lens primarily to shoot my kids in track, soccer and X country meets and this lens has been great for those sports. Where: I'm shooting primarily outdoors in fields or on tracks (Hayward field once). Interestingly, I found that cloudy conditions were OK to shoot with this lens.... When I've tried to shoot practices under flourescent lights I saw some struggles with the auto focusing. When: The sports I'm shooting are generally in the day time, so the auto-zoom and tracking are spot on. I was able to consistently record and take pictures of my son throughout the track without any problems! I would have to switch to manual focus if there were many kids passing by in front of the lens, but the lens still handled that easily. Handles 15 image burst-shots with no problems (like taking pictures of the boys coming off the starting blocks), amazing pictures! When trying to shoot Soccer at dusk under lights, I had issues with the auto focusing and the light in the pictures, so I had to switch to the 70-200 in those cases. Why: So for being my first telephoto lens ever, I was very fortunate to have this lens without having to give up a kidney. I have since bought a 24-105 variable aperture and a 70-200 f4. The focusing on the 100-400 is faster than my 24-105 and yes the 70-200 is a GREAT lens at f4, but when I need to get the extra details on the other side of the track, I still need the reach of the 100-400 to get those shots. I highly recommend this lens! The only caveat is to expect diminishing performance as the sun starts to go down.

Slow, not good for low light. Still great.
Use this on an r5, pretty slow to autofocus, poor light visibility. However I would recommend it based on the price, I think it’s a good value. It is really sharp when you have good weather and the picture quality is comparable to higher cost versions. The build quality isn’t the best, it’s plastic and not weather protected but because of it it is really light so you’ll be more likely to bring it with you. And the price too may make you less worried about when to use it.. it’s a good functional part of your kit and it can be fun to zoom around that much and see wildlife closer

Extremely sharp, a good starter zoom lens for wildlife, lightweight compared to other lenses of similar mm length…
