Q: Can this be used to test hay in a windrow or container, before bailing?

Not accurately. It uses resistance across two points and loose hay doesn't provide the contact needed.

Q: In the open air mine displays 8%. the manual says this means it needs to be cleaned and reset. its brand new. and reset causes it to display 'err'?

They come with a clamp on fitting to calibrate with. I absolutely love mine and honestly haven't had to do anything but use it. Personally I won't go to the field without it.

Hello Janet. The AgraTronix, 07121 HT-PRO Portable Hay Moisture Meter with 10" Probe & Calibration Clip can read temperature. Temperature range is 32° to 225°F (0° to 107°C).

Q: Will this accurately read corn stalk bale moisture?

We only used it for triticale hay, grass hay, and oat hay. Works great, we have 2!
