I like this opener. I do plan to varnish the handle. It may have sealer on it now but it feels like bare wood. The manufacturer probably designed it this way because the handle really provides a great grip. The handle does not detract from the opener in any way, I think it will look nice for a longer time with a coat of light varnish on the handle. I also ran it through my knife sharpener a few times so that it will cut envelopes and packing tape more easily. Again, personal preference. It works very well right out of the box. I expect this opener to last a long time. It is well worth the price.

I needed a new letter opener and this one is perfect. The blade is not sharp so it will not cut your fingers. It is easy to hold and it cuts envelopes perfectly.

I bought this letter opener because I wanted a bigger one to replace the one I had. It's perfect. The finish is very nice, the blades are sharp and the handle a very nice color. I actually applied 3 coats of polyurethane on the wood handle to seal the wood and give it a protective coat. It's perfect.

Noticed that this is not a Westcott brand letter opener. The edges on this opener are extremely dull. If you are looking for something a little more safe to have around the house, this might be for you. But if you are looking for something that is very sharp and will do more than just open letters, then this one is not for you.

I had a problem with a late delivery - down to Royal Mail, not the seller, as it turns out who subsequently contacted me with an update (thank you for responding). This is not an expensive item and was delivered with free postage and really, unless you were out to make a statement or to give something as a gift, this is perfect for opening letters. It kind of has the look of a wooden handled steak knife, except the blade is double edged and whilst it is sharp enough to tackle any letters, it will not do you any harm. It is solidly made and looks in keeping, sitting on my wooden desk. I am very pleased with it.

Update oct 2022: Still have this, still razor sharp and performing great. Have avoided water, and wiped down any sticky residue immediately after use from envalope. No rust or noticeable wear and tear after years of fairly frequent use. 2015: Arrived in reasonable time, for the price its good, works well as a letter opener nice and sharp with comfortable handle.
