Ubiquitous, the rOtring 600 is a legendary drafting mechanical pencil -- now in interesting colors!
The first rOtring 600 came out in 1989. It was actually a successor to a Koh-i-noor mechanical pencil of the same design, with just some minor differences. From there, this new bold hexagonal brass bodied & stainless steel tip mechanical pencil would serve as a benchmark for the competition. Offered in silver and black colors only, it remained unchanged for many years. Only some minor internal differences were implemented, not affecting user experience at all. In time, a Japanese firm would obtain licensing to produce this pencil, as well as a few other models. And in typical Japanese style, the quality remained high. There are too many reviews out there already so I'll avoid being repetitive. This is a very nice pencil for the price. It is a bit on the heavy side, where some might be bothered by it. But if it was a serious problem, this model would've gone extinct long ago. The only real caveat is the vulnerability of the lead pipe (sleeve) at the tip. While it's made of sturdy steel, the mass of the pencil can create added momentum when dropped, and if the tip hits first, there's a good chance it'll bend. Sometimes it can be recovered with a little careful bending back into center... but half the time this doesn't work satisfactorily. Replacement tips can be purchased, but unfortunately rOtring charges enough that you'd need only fork over a few more dollars for an entirely new pencil. If you are careful with your pencils, this won't be a problem. But if you're known to drop them periodically... you'd want to take extra care not to drop the 600. Find yourself a disposable BiC ballpoint pen and steal the cap--it'll actually fit the 600 pretty well and serve as an excellent tip protector. Getting beyond the tip vulnerability, the boring dual choices of silver and black have finally been cracked. There's MANY colors available now. So far there appears to be white, yellow, cadmium yellow, gold, rose gold, green, blue, and red. PLUS, rOtring made ballpoint companions for each color. Yeah, if you're a collector, this can get pretty expensive. The cadmium yellow was a very limited release, so now opportunists are price gouging at 4 times the original price. The white is limited as well, but not as steeply, so you can still find them. Periodically the blue, red, and green ones go on nice sales.

Perfect gift for an engineer!
Hands down my favorite mechanical pencils. Build quality is top shelf, I love the all metal frame. These got me through my EE degree back in the day so they hold a special place for me. 0.7 mm is better for everyday work, 0.5 mm I used for schematic and mechanical sketching. Just get one of each! This pencil makes a great gift for the engineer in your life!!!

Beautiful, functional, and stable. A great gift for an artist!
This might be the cutest pencil ever. I knew what I was getting into when ordering the Rotring 600. I knew it didn’t have a retractable needle tip like the Rotring 800, but what I was trading in function, I received back in lead stability. Apparently, the 800 has a slight wiggle to the lead, and when it comes to needing accuracy (I’m an artist, so accurate lead pencil tips that don’t wobble are super important to me), the 600 was more my style. Because of the fragile needle tip though (if you drop it, say goodbye to your pencil working), this is relegated for home use at my desk, and doesn’t go traveling with me. It’s such a cute color, though, makes a great gift for anyone who loves pink or is an artist into fancy tools, and the build quality + feel of it is fantastic! I love mine. It’s expensive, but worth it, IMO, as you can’t really find anything else that looks this pretty at this build quality and functionality at the price range. Also, it fits perfectly in the leather sheath of my Plotter Mini 6 binder!

Buy Rotring 600
Rotring 600 is classic. There is a reason why certain designs do not change, because they have converged. I don't see how anyone can make improvements with Rotring 600. It's good, solid, and pretty. You can do amazing stuff with this pencil on your desk.

Fanciest pencil I own
I still don't know if it's worth the money, but I definitely love to write with it. It's a little heavy, but I find that the weight makes it feel very high quality, and my hand doesn't really get tired unless I write with it for several hours. I especially love how the finish on the metal feels. It's so smooth, with just the perfect amount of texture. I don't feel the need to buy any more, but I'm happy with the one I have, and it can make notetaking just a little bit more enjoyable. I am a fountain pen lover, so I'm definitely a fan of nice writing instruments, and I think this would make a great gift for anyone who enjoys writing by hand.

The Rotring in white is unbelievable
I was kind of iffy on the color. The Computer rendered image next to Amazon's listing looked a little dingy in spots. But in person the pencil is a beautiful color with a nice thick, evenly applied, coat of enamel. The amount of pearlescent pigment used is strong so the pencil looks a somewhat silvery-white. It's not feminine looking. I'd watched a video review of another brand of pencil that was all white and the reviewer commented that a white pencil keeps one's focus on the drawing (if the paper is white) because the pencil isn't subconsciously distracting. As usual, the Rotring 600 balances beautifully in the hand and that diamond knurling on the grip really keeps your pencil point where you want it.
