I wear it every day and I shower with it, holds my cross, thus far looks like it did the first day, gold and shiny!

No, it does not I've been wearing it 24/7 since I got it.

Q: Does this pick at shirt fabric effectively ruining your shirt?

No. Not in my experience. I have been wearing this without removing since I purchased about 2 months ago and I’ve not experienced this as I have with other products. It’s very cold where I live now so I’ve been wearing lots of sweaters, no picking or damage to my sweaters.
