Does it effect the color/brightness of the running light?

Very slightly but the light is still very visible. We do make a cutout version that cuts out and do not cover the DRL/running lights area.

do you need to used a heat gun?

Im sure that will help. I used a blow dryer and I got good results. Whichever you feel more comfortable with.
