ロケーションに関して指摘するなら、Morrisonが唯一アメリカ合衆国外に語りを移した異色作だと、まず評価してみる。人物に視点を移すなら、これまたヴァレリアン夫妻が食卓を囲む白人の心理を内在化した実験的テクスト、と肯定的評価を献呈しよう。とかく主人公サンに注目が集まりがちだが、彼を取り巻く脇役達にも魅力が満載。カリブ海に舞台を設定しながら、アメリカ的色彩と異国情緒的感性、故郷喪失感が渾然一体となって読者に迫ってくるのは、多様な人物達が一種のヘテログロシアを為しているからだろう。惜しむべくは、前作ほどのストーリーの飛躍が見られず、物語が停滞している点。これを時間性の欠如と特徴付ける批評家もいるが、歴史性が不在というわけではない。むしろ歴史は折り畳まれて、固形匡?している。いずれにしても、黒人の歴史的背景を重ね合わせて読む読者の前向きな参加なくして、満足な読後感は得られない。
