Works well for pole lamps long as you don't bump the pole
In my subdivision we have gas pole lamps in front of every home. It looks nice, and adds an extra layer of safety to the subdivision. However the site planners made a big mistake they planted the pole lamps just inches away from the drive way. It's fine most of the time because we don't park in front of it, but just about every time we have a dinner party or several guest come over invariable someone parks next to it and when they open their door BAM the mantle breaks and we're left with no light. Because of that I've gone through a lot of mantles. For the price/performance aspect these are the best I could fine. The hard kind I find are more fragile and prone to breaking up with even less force against the pole. At least these are fabric and can withstand a little bump here and there. However with time the material gets more brittle and will break and fall off when someone bumps there door against the pole.Regarding the mantle itself. It comes pressed and squished up, which is fine because it's just fabric. You have to grab the ring and pull on the fabric an kind of shape it. I've learned from experience that before you light it and while it's soft you have to try to shape it somewhat like a nice rounded shape. Once it's been lit, it'll keep that shape. Following the instructions you need to turn off the gas insert the mantle and then light it on fire - then wait till it's burned through. It'll turn black and smoke a lot then it will turn ashy colored, and the flame will go out. After that you can turn on the gas, and relight it.

Worked in place of a formed mantel, outdoor gas lamp
These worked fine and bright in an outdoor gas lamp where I had used fitted mantels previously. These cast a bright ( what I feel is bright) yellow light from a gas lamp in my driveway. I previously used the fitted mantles and have had some issues with recent mantles being slightly damaged, only noticed after lighting. I've usually replaced these yearly and the fitted mantles are becoming expensive. These installed easy, have been lit for about a month now. Have yet to see how the howling winter winds will effect them.

Do not last very long
I purchased two set of these for my outside gas lamp. In the course of three months I have had all four of the mantles fail. They work for a few weeks and then they fall off the ceramic holder.

Easy to install, but…
The “soft” mantles are easy to install in a gas lantern (the ones outside of a house). Each package contains 2 mantles. Each mantle has a porcelain ring that easily fits over the gas supply in the lantern. By gently pulling the soft mantle down into an egg shape, the mantle will look good when lit. To light the mantle, turn on the gas and hold the lighter (a long one helps) to the sides of, but not directly on, the mantle. These burn bright and are nice. I tend to have to replace mine about every 6 months - usually after storms, etc - so you may want to have a backup set. There are limited options when it comes to replacement mantles and these are my “go to”

Nice and bright!
I used these on my outdoor gas lamp to replace a set of preformed mantles that only lasted a few months and to be honest, were very dim. These are nice and bright and hopefully will last a long time. I'm glad I bought two sets of them because I still haven't really mastered pre-burning them. The first one I turned to complete ash and they just fell apart. The second set though, I must have hit the magic spot and they worked fine.

Not being made with the same material as before?
I've been buying and using these mantles since 1985. I've had no problem with the company, the product, delivery, etc. The product was great, usually lasting several months before needing to be replaced. On the last few re-orders something had changed. Now, if they were lasting several WEEKS before needing to be replaced, I was lucky. Something has changed in their manufacturing. Maybe cheaper material, I don't know, but they begin degrading much faster than they used to. I waited after several re-orders before writing this. Too bad.....Not too many companies continue to make these (robust mantles) any more.

Broke within a week
Installation was easy and when they work, they work good. Installed two of these and within a week one of them broke and fell off. The other is just fine. Ordered a second set to see if it was just a fluke as reviews are generally good.Yes, I installed them correctly and per the manufacturer directions.
