They are simple and quick to use you just rip the packaging a decent amount and then plop from wrapper to back of the toilet. I don't really notice a smell they themselves emit but they do keep the bathroom fresh. They do stain the water bin in the back of the toilet which I'm not worried about you typically aren't in that part unless putting in a new one or fixing something broken.
