Rugged beauty with tensile strength like steel!
It can be a very hard thing with which to come to terms, but I am at an age when a walking support, such as a cane or walking stick, can become useful, even necessary. Well, it turned out that the very first ones I looked at also happened to be the best ones. I’m talking about Brazos Walking Canes, and what they call their Derby Cane in particular. That’s the one I bought, and I am truly in love with it! It’s a beautiful beast of a walking cane/stick. In my view, the Derby Cane is THE BEST (as well as the slickest looking!), for one reason: hickory, Hickory, HICKORY!! We’re talking good ol’ Texas hickory at that! Hickory has unsurpassed strength, density, stiffness and shock resistance—all the virtues that I want in my walking cane. With a Janka hardness rating of up to 2,000 lbf, this makes it one of the very hardest and most durable woods in the U.S. Importantly (to my mind, at least), it also makes this walking cane a formidable weapon in self-defense situations (even though it’s not made specifically for that purpose). For whether using it defensively or offensively, it it VERY unlikely that it would ever break, because it boasts a tensile strength that rivals steel. (You read that right—steel!) No one would ever mistake it for a self-defense weapon, however, because it has such an elegant and rustic beauty. Honestly, it looks like a work of art, and it IS, for each one is hand made, hand carved, hand sculpted. (Each and every cane has a 2-page “tag” tied to the top of it, which includes, among other things, the name of the individual craftsman who made it. Mine, for example, was crafted by Daniel Anz, who had been working at Brazos for over 10 years. Excellent job, Daniel, and thank you for your skill and artisanship!) Perhaps needless to say, given all the individual attention and skill put into it, the cane is an absolute pleasure to hold. Holding it by the handle is extremely comfortable in the hand, as is holding it, say, mid-way up the shaft when just carrying it. Every part of the cane feels not only solid but silky smooth and luxurious. Each cane comes with a rubber stopper at its end, for greater stability and control. It can be removed (for example, if you needed to shorten the stick a bit), but I would encourage you to keep it on, especially for indoor floors and any slick surfaces outside. My stopper blends right in with the wood, so I barely notice it. The craftsmanship on the “Derby Cane” is so well done that it feels like a natural extension of my arm. And though it has a rugged look (that I really like), it nonetheless has a luxurious feel from top to bottom. It is worth every dollar I paid for it—in fact, given the relatively high cost of hickory wood, I would honestly consider this gorgeous cane a bargain! As you can no doubt tell, I have no constructive criticisms to offer. As an avid woodworker myself, I can find nothing to complain about. The craftsmanship is THAT good. And I wouldn’t hesitate to buy this very same walking cane again. I hope this review was helpful, and best of luck with your shopping!

Incredible and Unique Walking Stick
I own a variety of canes and walking sticks. Included are 3 different walking sticks from Ireland made from Blackthorn. What is important to me is quality, strength, sturdiness, thickness and length. But an added factor is uniqueness. Well, this particular walking stick/cane checks all the right boxes for me and it’s unique in that it does not look like a medical device! I followed the guidelines so I ordered the right length for 6’. This cane is perfect. This cane has a 90 degree bend at the top which is important to me for as a great hand hold for balance. Each of these canes are unique and one of a kind.. it’s luck of the draw in that this item can not be specified in the order regarding to thickness or the angle for the top. Some websites that offer similar canes do have these options, but they can be more pricey and they give you the ability to order specific wood options. Either way, I am very happy to what I received!

Sturdy, beautifully imperfect and lightweight.
Okay even though this particular came I received and not have the nice big ball on the top it does have a significant hand grip where the root is supposed to be. It is precisely the right length that I need, has some nice gnarl from the branch trim on it I do kind of wish they would leave a little bit of the branch trimming on there, maybe a 1/8 in or up to a quarter inch just to give it a little character and texture along the shaft. But all in all I cannot complain. It is 100% natural, nice and light, feel sturdy. I'm 6 ft 220 and I have leaned on this just to see how much it would bend and it hardly bends at all. Definitely a very good purchase. Especially when you consider that these are not reproductions but 100% natural so each one is going to be individual unto itself and yes completely different Comma plus the perfectly imperfect Perfection On the shaft. As far as length it is actually 37.25 in length and I think part of that .25 in is going to be from the rubber pad on the bottom. With proper use this walking Aid will help definitely with some balance and with a little practice self-defense if ever needed. The only thing I might do since this is definitely a keeper, is sand off the remaining bark or at least rough it up really good and repaint the shaft a high gloss black or possibly even go mahogany stain in color.

Gorgeous but a bit larger than expected.
I like the craftsmanship but am disappointed for a few reasons. First, after taking my measurements using the Brazos instructions on their site I was show that a 37" cane would be the one for me. This is a 37" cane-- and it's too damned big. I can't use it until I get it shortened by about 3 inches, which is a lot. I live in a NYC apartment and don't have woodworking skills or tools. So taking it somewhere that I would trust to cut it down to size, and not risk damaging the wood, will be a challenge. And, the handle seems at first inspection a little clunky and much larger than expected. The proportions of the stick seem made for someone twice my size. I'm sure it will be fine, but it seems more like a hiking stick than a cane. Although, if you want a hefty, well made piece, this is the perfect stick. I do want to get it trimmed down and want to start using it to see if I might grow into it more. Perhaps, as an option for the Brazos folks to consider, making canes and walking sticks for people of smaller frames. Not everyone who needs assistance walking is over 6 feet tall or 200lbs+ and in my hands, this cane looks like it was made for a giant. Well made & attractive. I'm giving it 4 stars because it is a gorgeous piece of craftsmanship. I just wish it was ready for me to use.

This walking stick is perfect for me. It is very lightweight but also very strong. The top fits my hand perfectly and it is beautifully finished. If there were more stars I would give them……wonderful product!!!!!

A Beautiful Piece of Work
I never expected that this item would be so exceptional for what it cost. I trimmed it down about 1.25 inches for my height. It's a very nice piece of work. I can't praise it more than that.

Disliked? Nothing. Liked? Everything! This distinctive walking stick xceeded my expectations. Perfect length for me (I'm 6'2") with a curved 'handle' that is very comfortable to use. One piece construction with a serious rubber bumper on the bottom gives confidence that it is up to whatever the roadway throws at it. It has resulted in many positive comments from passersby. Highly recommended.
