Tons of great information - a must-have for noob backpackers.
I really enjoy reading this magazine. There is a lot of good information, including gear recommendations, interesting locations, and preparation tips. Every issue has something of value, and find myself re-reading articles from previous months to refresh my memory about hiking and backpacking tips. Gorgeous photography throughout - makes me look forward to getting out there and seeing some of the landscapes first hand.As for advertisements throughout the magazine, I didn't think they were excessive - in the latest issue (August 2017), out of 98 total pages, there were 39 pages of ads - three dual page ads, 24 single page ads, and nine partial page ads (ad was only the top or bottom half of a single page). And of those ads, only three had nothing to do with hiking or camping (one ad was for Coors Light, another for Harbor Freight tools, and an ad for dog food). The rest of the ads were very appropriate to the magazine and did not seem to distract from the contents. In perspective, other magazines have ads on every single page, so in considering this issue of Backpacker had 17 pages with no ads whatsoever, it's clear that the publishers still emphasize content over commercials. I suppose we could always see fewer ads but a higher subscription cost...The only downcheck was that some of the print is small and hard for my old eyes to read! That, and the print subscription doesn't automatically include an accompanying Kindle subscription - it would be nice to bring some of this along on my tablet (vice lugging a year's worth of magazines in my backpack) since I suspect I may someday be in a predicament that was covered in an article that I've long since forgotten about!

Going downhill slowly...Not what it used to be!
I love hiking and the outdoors. I've always enjoyed reading backpacker and three years ago, I subscribed for three years. Now, my subscripiton is coming to an end. I almost didn't renew, as with other magazines of late, the quality is going downhill and the magazine has lost about 20 pages. It is not what is used to be. There seems to be a trend out there, and I can't be the only one that notices it, but over the last year or so, some of my favorite magazines have cut down on the amount of pages in each issue and it is noticeable. I know the economy is in a sh-t, but I did pay in advance for a cerain magazine. Suddenly, all these magazine shrink the issues without any notice what so over. And they expect to keep us when the price remains the same for less of the magazine. I don't know. For this reason, I didn't want to pay a lot to renew. I figured I'd renew for one more year to give it a chance, and see where the magazine is headed. Happily, the price at Amazon.com beat the renewal/new subscription prices offered by Backpacker magazine itself. Imagine that. Hopefully, Backpacker goes back to where it was, instead of where it seems to be going. If it doesn't, it'll be another magazine I will not renew. You'd think the publishers would want to keep the subscribers they do have, but they don't. I know because I have contacted editors of a few magazines: Smart Computing for one and the editor first asked me what I missed. When I told him, he couldn't care less. What a bad attitude! Needless to say, I cancelled my three subscription and received a refund, only partial because they wanted to keep all my money.

Backpacker: Destinations, Skills, Gear
Backpacker magazine is for great resource for adventurers, hikers, campers, trekers, and gear-heads.Backpacker is a quick read (generally apx 80-100 pages)with colorful fullpage vista photos, which features: - adventure narratives - trip specifics: GPS routes, maps, permit info, trail highlights, elevation stats, etc - lists of the "greats" (enumerated lists of great camping sites, great gear, great national parks, etc) - recipes for the trail - gear recommendations - survival skill guides - additional information/resources made available on the webisteThe destination guide information is helpful to expand your backpacking, camping, and trekking trip options. The skills are sometimes pretty basic (first aid, bear safety, leave no trace)--but even highly-accomplished adventurers can use a reminder sometimes. The gear suggestions are often of the expensive-cutting-edge persuasion and trend toward the pursuit of the hyper-light.

Great magazine
I do a lot of hiking and some backpacking and this magazine has been so helpful. It's filled with great product reviews as well as hiking/backpacking destinations. I feel the reviews are honest and not based on advertising dollars so they are trustworthy. A lot of my hiking is in the White Mountains but has included the Canadian Rockies, Alaska, Utah, and Slovenia. I've used this magazine as a resource for all of these destinations. If you like the outdoors...hiking/backpacking this a go-to resource.

Meaningful Writing and Reviews
I'm not a magazine purist in the sense that I think 90% of the content should be deeply meaningful writing- I subscribed to backpacker because I wanted good writing, product reviews and ads that were at least targeted to my personal interests. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the writing in this magazine and found myself doing more than just skimming the pages looking for cool new gear. It was a pleasant surprise to get drawn in to stories and experiences from other people around the world who share a passion for the outdoors. Very happy to be subscribed to Backpacker and will continue in the future! Sidenote: love the gear guides.

Lots of Good Information!
I ordered this in January of 2017 with a 6 to 8 week wait time for my subscription to kick in only to arrive at the office and have a January and March issue within a few weeks. I still haven't gotten the February issue and if its only a 10 issue per year or every other month subscription, were golden, if its a 12 month issue, then I would like to get my February issue. Other than that, I have thoroughly enjoyed both issues though there is a lot of the samo samo stuff being said between the two issues, I am still looking forward to my next one!
