Great Units and a Big Bang for the Buck!
Great Units and a Big Bang for the Buck!Whether you are a one-man shop (like mine) or a large, complex structure, you encounter what seems like practical issues that have always existed, without discovering simple cures. In my case, we have a two building campus, with a playground forming a triangle. Being a combined school / church there are “extras” scattered around the sidelines. In our case, we have a couple of trailers (we lovingly call them “cottages”) that are used by both the school and the church. Each entity has an IT staff, separate network, etc. As such, we approach solutions differently. For the most part, the cottages belong to the church, while the playground belongs to the school. Practical issues include the ability (or inability) to project a wireless signal into the cottages, out to the playground, or the ability to maintain a signal as one walks the XX yards from one building to the other. In fact, based upon the potential costs of resolving the issues, we ignore them and treat them as just life, with the issues not existing or not a factor in our school day.Budgets are a prime factor in my world. There is only so much money, be it for programs, networking, or computer devices. We stretch our computers as far as we can. We are not sophisticated, being self-taught working in the IT world which is my third life or career. Not having time to research long wish lists, solutions frequently fall into our laps. Our building is old and made of cinderblock on top of more cinderblock. Wireless signals do not like cinderblock. Therefore, the experts say, put an Access Point (“AP”) in every room. Budget says, HA HA! The only way to accomplish anything close to this is to use lower cost products. While we currently have some Aerohive units scattered throughout the building as the main backbone of our wireless network, the units used in most of the rooms are Engenius EAP150. We were able place these into many of the rooms and have been well pleased with their performance over the years.Engenius has been upgrading their products introducing an entire line that competes in today’s high tech wireless world without breaking the bank. Two of these are the ENS500-AC and its cousin ENS500EXT-AC. These are outdoor APs with a longer range. Two months of usage finds us well pleased with the steady performance, high bandwidth, and extended range. We can push the signal into our cottages, as well as out to the playground. The walk between buildings may now be leisurely since the signal remains steady.A major factor for us is that the pricing remains at the lower end of the spectrum so we have encountered these great benefits without breaking the budget. If there is a fault with these products, it is that the LED lights are on the back of the unit and very had to see if the unit is properly mounted. In the long-run, this is a minor fault in my mind.Jim Arthur, IT Director, CRCS

Hard to connect, worked for 1 year
Purchased this item 1 year ago, and hard wired it to my modem. It was located outside protected from weather, as I needed stronger internet for my detached office. Took about 2 weeks of troubleshooting/talking with customer support before I was able to get it to work properly. Worked great after that, and I had fast reliable internet to my office. Until recently the connection got intermittent, then completely went out. Spent a full day troubleshooting, and nothing is at fault up to the unit itself. Unit is powering on, but not transmitting a signal. I'm done, and will be spending my money on another device.

HORRIBLE Customer Support
This is the third EnGenius AP I've purchased. The others worked with no faults. This one would not connect on any device either in the factory default settings or after I set up a network. Contacted tech support via email (they have disconnected their tech support phone number) where, after an initial response asking for my IP address and subnet mask, they didn't respond to any emails for TWO MONTHS. Finally responded with a link to a Youtube video that could be helpful to someone that doesn't know how to set up network but didn't help the fact that I had a faulty device on my hands. I should have just returned it to Amazon immediately but I tried to do the right thing by contacting the manufacturer.Amazon did refund me even though the refund window had expired. For that, I am thankful.

Dumb Management Interface Design Decision
I'm a former network engineer and have been using EnGenius wifi products for several years now. I previously installed the ENS500EXT (previous generation of the ENS500EXT-AC model being reviewed) in a WDS Bridge configuration covering my 12 acre campus. The earlier model provided access to the management IP address on the device via the wifi interface. This meant that I could access any device in my campus network remotely via wireless connection. The new version of this product does NOT allow you to ping, telnet or connect via web interface to the management IP address on the device when you are in WDS Bridge mode. You can only reach the device management IP by physical connection via ethernet cable. So now instead of remote management, I would have to go to the device and use an ethernet cable connection.Tech support - now provided only via email (shame on you EnGenius) confirmed that the management IP is not reachable when in WDS Bridge mode.I have no idea why I would want a device in my network that I cannot manage remotely! Why would I put a "ghost" device in a network - do they think it would be fun chasing connectivity issues through a black hole?I urge EnGenius to release a firmware update to the ENS500EXT-AC and correct this ridiculous oversight. In the meantime, I'm sending this unit back and looking for alternative hardware. It's a shame - these units have worked pretty well for me up to this point. Add reduced tech support to the equation and these guys are headed for oblivion IMHO.

Not as advertised
I went online, and all my research said the device had WEP security with 128 bit encryption(Engenius website). Bought it, and it does not. Matter of fact, it was only 5G with WPA only. The 2.4 pretty much has only a couple of settings that you cannot modify. The range on the 5G was about 15 feet. Support with Engenius is limited to email only. Ended up going with TPLink EAP245. Cheaper, and much better range. It has WEP security and the 2.4 ghz is fully customizable.
