The Business of Dog Walking: How to Make a Living Doing What You Love

Thoughtfully written, but...
Great resource for understanding body language, Pack Management and smart business tips. In general a good book, but like all books about dogs you take what works and leave what doesn't.My one major complaint is blaming some under-socialization issues on owners/vets who take their vets advice by not allowing their puppies to meet other dogs/people until they have been fully vaccinated. And that the risks of Parvo are not that great. I feel this is un-wise advice.1) For socialization most people are likely to take their puppies to either Doggie Day Care where they need ALL of their shots or to a Dog Park that is most probably full of diseases that live in the dirt, like Parvo, and Giardia in the water sources from people who DON'T vaccinate.2) We do dog rescue and my husband works in a pet shop: Our lives are dogs. We have a vaccination protocol for rescue dogs and puppies: No puppies on the ground until 3-4 shots at 16 weeks. In the last year there has been an out break of vaccine resistant Parvo in SF Bay Area because of under vaccinating and homeless and low income folks not vaccinating their dogs because of income restrictions,(Sidenote: Everyone should have access to free vaccinating and Spay/Neuter). We have seen several cases of Parvo in the last 12 months. It's something you don't want to contend with. I can go on...I think you can socialize your puppy at home w/ people and CLEAN vaccinated dog friends coming over to visit, but please, please, please vaccinate your puppies BEFORE you take them to the Dog Park or on the filthy street. I think gambling with health over behavior is a losing game.Again, the rest of this book and Veronica Boutelle's other books are quite good. I just couldn't let this issue go with out getting on my soap box.

a little outdated
There was some good information in this book but some of it was a bit outdated. I found it kind of helpful in a general way.

I would like to be able to afford to take her weekend course but since I am unable to, this book gives me a lot of what I need to know to get going. I particularly like her philosophy of training, rewards for behavior we want, taking away rewards for behavior we don't want, no domination or punishment mentality. It confirms something I sensed inside but didn't have the back up to defend.

A really helpful book if you are thinking about becoming a dog walker. I loved it!
I love this book! It's filled with tons of information. It answered all the questions I had about dog walking. How to deal with different types of dogs, screening your clients, how to load dogs into the vehicle, business aspects, etc. Veronica mentioned a lot of things that I would never had thought of relating to dog walking. Because of this book, I decided to become a student for her Dog Walking Academy (dogtec). It was an accelerated course and I learned a lot. It was such a pleasure to meet her. She's really nice and has so much information for you.
