I think it is better than an inverter since you can physical see the voltage supplied at any moment. Car battery is too heavy.

I have used the step down transformer for 2 years without any issues. Please check your load, is the rating 110V or more? Switch on the transformer without any load and check the Voltage meters to see if everything is normal.
