can I use just the crankshaft locking pin only to tighten the harmonic balancer?

There is a tool to hold the Harmonic Balancer itself for this process. This is not the correct tool.

Yes. It does not have the handle like the factory tool. Its just a flat bar. Does the job.

Does it work on the 2017 cruze 1.4l dohc i-4 vvt di turbocharged?

Yes I used it on this exact application. You won't use all of the items but this is the best kit for the money. You need to make sure the cam stays aligned so you won't have to fix the timing on your cruise. I used this when I changed out the headgasket on the 2017 cruise i4 turbo.

Will this work on a 2012 Chevy Sonic 1.4 turbo?

I am not sure. I used it for a 2012 cruze 1.4 turbo charged eco. I believe they are the same engine.
