Q: Will these work with 12gauge wire. I have the older version and 12 gauge wire will not fit in slot

It is a tight fit but as long as the sharp probe penetrates the 12 gauge wire, it should work. It worked on my 12 gauge.

Q: Are these waterproof?

they are not water proof. I use them in 12v outdoor lighting connections and they are under mulch.

Q: Will this work with solid awg 20 light cord to awg 16?

I think that transitioning from any solid core wiring would be problematic. I believe this connector is designed for use with stranded core wire, where the individual strands are “mushed” together to form an electrical connection. Might be worthwhile to buy a small pack and see whether you can make it work.
