Why do the stop working after a while?

Seems to be real hit or miss on the production quality. I received a two pack of these two Xmas's ago, and the one in my master bath ran for over a year on one set of batteries, and is still working on new batteries now. The other one died after about 3-4 months and never worked again.

Pardon the grossness of this question, but it seems like it would get disgustingly dirty. How do you keep it clean? Just remove and wipe down or...?

Yeah, its water proof so wiping it down and washing it off is easy. It just hangs on the bowl so it's pretty easy to do and only the light probe is in the bowel area. Oh, it gets dirty but no worse than the bowl itself and you may clean it when the toilet get's it's cleaning, it's not a big deal at all.. I use Lysol spray and a towel to wipe everything down.
