Great quality, great sound, a professional preamp you will absolutley love!
I am very thrilled to have received this product, after the bitter disappointment of the DBX. There is no comparison. The price you pay corresponds to the quality. Presonus is an American brand, recently acquired by Fender. So it's no joke. In the package there is a manual, a guide for musicians about the production of records and marketing (I really appreciate !) and the power cord with a small transformer, which has a handy switcher like the one of the bedroom lamps. As I said the build quality of the material used is high, the color is a nice matte blue, it has a fan for the reaction above, which is very useful to avoid overheating. Rack or desk placement. It's not bulky: I have a very narrow desk and it fits beautifully. Furthemore, the knobs are elegant but very solid, and turn easily. We find: instrument input on the front, TRS output and microphone input on the back. The switch off button is on the back too, but it is not a problem for me, as there is the switcher on the power cable which is very handy. The effects are, as advertised, compressor, saturation, equalizer, phase inversion and there is a knob for output gain and preamp gain. Since there is also a guide with standard parameters for EQ and compression in the manual, it is easy to play even for a novice. Tried with a Yamaha AG06 audio interface/mixer, quite old and cheap. The difference in terms of sound, and gain, is huge. Never heard my voice like this before, maybe just once in the record studio (but they charge.. ) Finally, I have not encountered any kind of problem or imperfection. More importantly, the unit is completely, but I mean completely silent! For those looking for a faithful and clean sound, but which can also be manipulated towards a warmer and more full-bodied sound, and have professional studio quality at an affordable price. Highly recommended.

The best sound from my SM7B Mic to date!
I previously had a Behringer Ultrapro preamp run through a Alesis Compressor / Gate and Behringer Mini EQ. There was a hiss which I thought was normal and it turns out it wasn't the Behringer causing it. Aiming to rid of all that gear, I bought a 'channel strip' (Pre, Compressor, EQ in one unit) which is the 'Presonus Studio Channel'. My audio interface is a Steinberg UR242. Not only did The Studio Channel rid of the hiss, it took the sound of my already good sounding SM7B to another level. The EQ section comprising of a total of eight knobs for low, mid and high frequencies, allowed me to increase the bass in my voice and add an element of brightness - might like the typical 'radio voice sound' which was the goal! The compressor does it's job for me for my voiceover work and as mentioned the pre is quiet. Notable hiss doesnt come into play until you turn the gain right up. I also bought a Cloudlifter and later a Soyuz Launcher which helped me increase my mic signal whilst allowing me to turn down the gain even further. My sound quality has increased a lot as a result buying the Studio Channel alone. What's more, I just sold me old gear to pay for it. If you're looking for a simple, effective solution for an all in one pre, compressor and EQ, this seemingly represents one of the best choices you can make!

Sold as a customer return, supposedly in good condition, but was actually faulty.
Item was described as a customer return, so was offered at a discount price, but described as being in very good condition. When I received the item, it appeared to be in perfect condition, but when I installed it and switched it on, it was clearly faulty. There was an obvious electronic issue, causing oscillations and unacceptable noise in the audio output. The unit was totally unusable, so it was immediately returned. Now I understand why the original purchaser returned it. Amazon should never have tried to resell it, without testing it fully.

Good product, tube element is a bit of a gimmick but it is a good budget pre!
I bought this to have as a solid, budget pre in order to have a bit of flexibility with one of my inputs. It does this nicely, and is very intuitive to use. The tube part is a bit of a gimmick though as it is not a high end, high voltage tube design, and really doesn’t give you the typical tube character that everyone looks for. However, it never actually promises to give you that particular type of tube sound, it just states that is uses a tube section. I see no problem with that, and the tube section looks to be nice and simple to maintain. You can push it if you want, but I don’t find the results to be particularly pleasing to the ears. This is a decent pre that I find very useful for optimising workflow and getting levels just right. Sounds good, is built to last, and I think it looks good too (especially with the blue lights!). The VU meter is nice to have too. Worth the £80 I payed for it on sale, but I wouldn’t pay the full price personally considering the alternatives. But that’s just me. I give it 4 stars simply because the full price seems to be a little excessive. If it were a little lower I would absolutely rate 5 stars.

Class for low cost....
This is a very neat unit that performs well, especially at the price. The 'valve sound' facility is subtle when used in moderation and adds some warmth to the overall sound. I changed the Chinese 12AX7 with a USA Jan Philips 12AT7 and whilst this reduced the amount of gain available it made the sound and control much improved. VU meters are a nice touch to days gone by....only criticism is the abscence of an on/off switch....other than that it's a fine purchase.

Great bit of kit
Item arrived bang on time and did exactly what I wanted it to do as a Mic Pre Amp.

In all SS mode (zero tube drive) this is a very "transparent" preamp. The treble is "airy" for lack of a better word, with no hint of harshness. It captures the detail and sounds good on just about anything if a neutral response is what you want. On the other hand I was pleasantly surprised by the tube drive. I guess I wasn't expecting much, but it sounds good on some sources. Monophonic instruments in particular like vocals seem to benefit the most, probably due to the lack of intermodulation distortion. The tube drive can add texture to a singer with a "dull" voice. It tried it with good results on an acoustic guitar. As the drive is turned up not only are low order harmonics added but the lower treble region is slightly boosted for more increased presence. In short the tube drive brightens the sound and adds warmth (in the form of soft distortion) at the same time. On heavy settings it's possible to see the tube drive compressing one side (pos or neg) of the signal while preserving the other side, typical of the distortion characteristic of a single triode. The phase button is peculiar. Pressing the phase button "in" adds bass and warmth to the signal. Leaving it out produces a flatter, less colored response but with less bass. Overall there is 80dB of gain and it's not noisy. It should work with a ribbon mic. Using the phase button and the tube drive along with different gain settings yields a slightly different response and sound. This preamp can sound like many different preamps. There is one comment I would like to make. If you don't have a really good mic don't waste your money on a super expensive preamp. I can hear the difference between a $5000 preamp, a $900 preamp, a $100 preamp, and a $30 preamp. But, MOST PEOPLE would not be able to tell which sounds better, or perhaps I should say, most people will not appreciate the difference between the $29.99 preamp and the $5000 (take your pick of brands) preamp (barring use of compressors or other effects). Again, I can hear the difference, BUT, if I put a $30 compressor in the hands of a professional producer and he was forced to use it to track an entire album I guarantee that the album would sound good. The ART is a sterile amplifier that is quiet and accurate until pushed in which case it also has a tube that will compress and distort. I think the PreSonus has the best sound quality/price ratio of any preamp. For a very low price you get a preamp that is virtually indistinguishable from very expensive preamps costing over 10 times more. The tube drive is a bonus as far as I'm concerned, but I'm certain that I will be using it on tracks after trying it and discovering it actually works well.

This thing sounds GREAT and adds almost no noise to the signal. Other similar devices I've used, especially at this price point, add a noticeable hiss to the sound which gets annoying fast. This thing is almost crystal clear. All the features it offers is incredible, and each works very well. Good response on the parameters you can tweek, allowing you to get a broad range of tones and colors. Well worth the money, would buy another if mine broke.
