Q: Is the watch silent when on or does it tick

Silent, be aware my first one didn't hold the time. It was replaced and the replacement stopped working after a month of use!!

Q: Does the watch have a "back light" or are the hands painted in illuminous paint. Is the date easy to read ( someone slightly short sighted)

There is no light with the watch, illumination appears to be a chemical coating on hands/dial only.(this absorbs light then releases it back slowly )the numbers are a strong white on a strong black which makes for good definition (it is easy to read in Good light conditions)but it is a dark watch overall and may have visibility issues in low light/dark conditions.Hope this information helps you make a decision.
