Harvest (50th Anniversary)

Reaping the harvest..
Harvest 50th anniversary edition.OK first things first - I am a huge fan of Neil Young and buy everything he puts out. Harvest I first heard in my early 20s, its an album so deep and perfect I have lived inside it for many years and has been part of the soundtrack to my adult life.I had this delivered the day it came out and last night sat down to listen and watch. The 50th anniversary of the album is superb, I have in the last few months upgraded my stereo and have noticed how warm and rich it sounds. It's one of the best albums ever made. Writing this part is easy.Outtakes - well we only get 3, all of which are previously unreleased versions of songs any serious fan will own. This disc is very sparse and I know his vaults have other tracks that could have been included.BBC - album and dvd. Any fan who has ventured into the grey market (bootlegs) will potentially have this set, I mean its excellent and lovely to have an official release, but as fans we are really spoilt for choice with live stuff from this period. I can't even count how many archive/performances series releases there are.The hardback book is wonderful, essays and photos from this period, beautifully bound and presented. The box everything is housed in is sturdy and looks great next to Archives 1 and 2. We also get a poster of Neil and the Stray Gators playing in the barn.. Which leads me to the big one.Harvest time dvd. I used to dream of seeing footage of this, knowing he recorded tracks in the barn was part of the mythology surrounding this album. Now 30 plus years after reading about it my dream has come true and.... Its boring and overlong. 2 hours this film could do with trimming, some of the performances have guitars woefully out of tune, watching any band rehearsals is an acquired taste and the film drags. 24 minutes in Crosby and Stills appear, everything comes alive as they work out harmony parts to Words. But as a film, I am glad I didn't go to watch it at the cinema. In short this should 3 and a half stars, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but 50 quid is a lot of cash to get scythed.

Absolutely Fantastic
This is an absolutely fantastic album / 50th anniversary edition of ‘Harvest’Now, the music itself is (obviously) sublime: Neil’s very best (IMHO).This new box set is also a real treat. The contents are housed in a nice / sturdy box & includes: a little hardback book, a poster (of Neil & the band), a couple of CDs of outtakes / live performances, and two DVDs, one of a BBC concert & the other a 1970s documentary about the recording of the Album. And, of course, a ‘freshened-up’ version of the original Harvest album. This 2022 edition sounds amazing. For just under £50 this box-set is excellent value. There has obviously been tremendous attention to detail here, the whole set is very well & deliciously presented. I couldn’t be happier with this.If you’ve not heard this music before then you are in for a real treat. It truly is one of the very BEST albums of ALL time. If you HAVE heard it before then you’ll know what to expect. I guess the question, then, is whether to shell-out 50 quid for an album you may already own. However, as I’ve mentioned above, this is a glorious way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Harvest. Given all the set’s contents, you get, I believe, a lot for your money and all housed in a very nice keepsake. Thus, believe me when I say that you WILL enjoy this wonderful box set!!! I promise you that you’ll not be disappointed! This only arrived today & I’m about to put it on again.Buy ‘n’ Enjoy y’all!

A decent collection
Harvest has always been one of my favourite albums so I couldn't resist this. The best disc, apart from the harvest cd, is the harvest time dvd. Great to see this 'rich hippy' (his words) trying to get his ideas across to the conducter of a classically trained orchestra - a hoot! The bbc sessions are a nice addition but not essential.

Neil's best selling album ???
The debate will always centre around whether Harvest is his best album, perhaps his best selling album but the 70s represent his 'golden' period for sheer brilliant albums that compare starkly with recent albums excluding the archive releases. The reality is that Harvest is his best known record and perhaps best selling record. His later releases in the 70s are superior plus the seminal Rust Never Sleeps album. For fans essential but if you're passing through perhaps an expensive detour.

Value for money?
Glad to have this issue as I'm a completist but the two extra cds run in at approx 40 minutes for the two which is just nuts. Why not throw in some of the concert performances from the time?? Or else leave them out and charge 30 quid only. Three out of 5 stars only.. Martin

An Old Man lost for Words
I'm always a bit reluctant to invest in Super Deluxe boxes, but I thought this was wonderful from start to finish. I have the original vinyl and CD but this sounds much better. Loved the other CDs and DVDs. Documentary was very enjoyable.

Still going strong
What a great package the album and outtakes and the film and concert, anyone who knows the album will know how good it is and 50 years later still has it. Worth the money for what you get all good.
