I am trying to buy a bench top planer for my husbands xmas is this the correct tool ?

It is a very good planer. The choice is between it and a floor-standing planer with a long table. It depends upon: the room available, your budget and the size of work. If he is regularly making large pieces of furniture, a machine with a long table might be necessary.

how many blades are in this at any one time?

The DW733 has 2 blades. I've only just bought mine so I'm yet to use it but the reviews I've read all agree this gives a great finish. Later (more expensive) models have 3 blades but apparently they don't sufficient improvement to justify the extra cost according to many with experience of both options. Each of the blades is reversible so when the first 2 are blunt the blades can be flipped over. Again officially the blades can't be sharpened but I've found a few reviewers that say they can be sharpened - I'll let you know ;-)

Are there different blade types for softwoods & hardwoods?

I make exotic chopping boards and the blades cut great for hardwoods take smaller passes and your laughing

Does this come with the attachment to direct the chippings towards my extractor hose?

Yes. You may need an adapter to fit depending on your extractor hose
