The Secrets of Dance Music Production: The World's Leading Electronic Music Production Magazine Delivers the Definitive Guide to Making Cutting-Edge Dance Music : David Felton, Greg Scarth, Marc Adamo, Chris Barker, David Felton: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: Pretty concise and not afraid to bust myths - First things first. This isn't an A to Z route map to making a tune. If you want that I'd suggest one of the many video based tutorials various places do. This is a repository of information and you read cover to cover or dip in and out as you feel. For most elements of EDM this really is as deep as you can go. The only bit I felt maybe needed some expansion was the theory section but it constantly references real tunes so you can hear exactly what they mean as well. The problem is theory is a deep subject and coming from piano and guitar I felt it was maybe a bit lacking but I guess it's a bottomless pit if deep dive with theory. It's fine for beginners though. What I did like was the fact it was willing to say, yeah this is how you program a kick, here's the compression settings and types but sod it, if you want to use sample and loops then do so, if it sounds good, it sounds good. Review: Great framework for dance music creativity - Good level of useful detail supporting the creation and production of dance music. Would suit someone at an early stage of development, but also useful for someone like me to use as a refresher or for extra clarity on things. Written in a very clear way with supporting examples that can be used very practically. The book can be used as a complete guide from cover to cover, studied as individual chapters, or for picking out small elements for quick implementation. Excellent way of translating technical actions and details into musical outcomes. Consistent standard throughout.

The book that will change your life if you are a good learner
This book is so deep with information that it leaves no question unturned. You can read it page by page and go on a musical journey as it explains everything concisely or you can pick it up and jump into the bass section and follow a quick. In my eyes this book should be taught as a course but I suppose it’s better this way because it means you can get all the knowledge of a dance producer at your fingertips which to me is like one of the greatest books that I have ever read! If you follow the whole book step by step you will become a master in my eyes with the knowledge that used to be hidden from us mortals.

Falling apart
I really like the book, the knowledge in it, and as a reference it is fantastic. It also looks great I like the format of the larger pages for reference. However 1 year on and with only one read through and sitting on a shelf I have noticed the book is falling apart at the spine. Like the glue they used is no good. Never had this before with a book: if u order one be sure to check it out at the spine.

Spot on
Wow. Just wow. I’ve been in the music biz 28 years and have actually produced 65 records globally. No joke...so some may think I know everything. I don’t. This author does and he’s helped me a lot! The landscape nature of this book is attractive in itself and the content is outstanding. Covers everything you need to know about dance music production and much more. From creating the best kick drums, snares, hats etc and even compression. There’s a good bit which explains how to step programme beats and even a graphical look at how some well known dance hits were arranged.

Good Content, Good Layout, Cannot Fault
Excellent book through a weird size but I can see why they did it. Sure, there's nothing here you can't find online or with a Computer Music subscription but it's a handy book to have to hand for quick tips and production inspiration. Obviously it's based around Ableton and I tend to use Cubase now (because it's just a lot better DAW!) but all the production skills/tricks are transferable if you know your preferred DAW

Brilliant book the explanations are easy to understand and your given the resources to apply the techniques you are learning. Personally there are some things I would do differently but on the whole if you want to understand how to mix and produce tracks this is a good start. I am using this as a homework task book to follow to support learning and it is doing wonders.

This book will basically bring you from an amateur producer to an intermediate/advanced producer. What's important is to not read the book from the beginning to the end without applying anything as you would forget most of the stuff by the time you are done with the book. I suggest only looking into it when you need something specific. Use it as a guide or a dictionary. Overall, the book has thought me a lot, especially in the Drums and Mixing&Mastering sections.

As someone trying to expand on my electronic production skills, this book has been absolutely amazing. It breaks down all the components from percussion to in-depth synthesis, to music theory, etc. Regardless of the reader’s level of musician experience, the book is written in a way to easily comprehend. I have purchased various books and master classes yet this book covers so much more. I particular like how they cover different equipment and show examples on various DAWs instead of just one. The tip portions alone have sharpened my skills. Great book. Buy it.
