Q: Does it use a filter?

No, the Cool Mist Humidifier does not use a filter. It should be cleaned once a week or so. Rinse out the water container and wipe down all the surfaces. Do not get the lower part wet near the control or the underside. There are some tight spots on the device. I use a small narrow brush and q-tips to glean out any residue. Gently clean the black disc in the lower section. Do not use abrasive cleansers or bleach.

Q: I ordered this because the discription said it was ultrasonic. No where on the box or unit states that. Is this a ultrasonic unit?

Yes it is. The other type of unit is evaporative" It uses a fan and wicks that must be replaced to function. Ultasonic (like this one) puts very small droplets of liquid water in the air that may change to water vapor from the warmer air. EVAPORATIVE DEVICES produce the water vapor directly inside the unit. Ultasonic use distilled water ... Evaporative any water..All impurities Remain in the unit..

Q: Can the inner tube be accessed to clean?

There is a small, half inch diameter hole giving access to the inside of the inner tube. I imagine that the right size brush would work. The tank opening is large enough to put your hand through for cleaning the outside of the tube.

Q: Can tap water be used?

I use tap water though I always run the water through a Britta filter.
