Great products and well worth the money!
Bought this for my 2011 21.5" iMac. Having studied many online tutorials, learned how to open the case and prepped all the relevant tools before installing this, it made doing the job a lot easier. The item itself is excellent, and does exactly what it says it does. The HDD adapter fitted the Macs frame perfectly and was very sturdy in holding in the new SSD I put in it. All the screw holes lined up perfectly and it was an easy install. The Mac is now running like a new machine.Re-using the superdrive in the supplied caddy means my Mac loses no functionality. The caddy itself is plastic but for the price and what it does, I cant complain at all. As I am very careful with all my computer peripherals, this wont be an issue. I can imagine someone less careful may cause damage to the superdrive, if they mishandle it. All in all, for the money it is an excellent pair of products that have enabled my Mac to be like new again. VERY highly recommended

Necessary item if you want to replace your Super Drive - Excellent product.
Great if you are wanting to remove super drive from your mac and replace with another drive. I have just used it to replace mine with a 500gb SSD, and this makes it such an easy process. The bonus of this coming with a conversion kit that makes the superdrive an external drive is inspired. Please note, if you are wanting to do this, you do have to change some stuff on the mac itself, but that is easy to do, using instructions that are available on the web. I don't feel for me this means I have lost anything, as I wasn't using the super drive anyway and now I still can if I need to.I found this a good value product and the replacement process was pain free and simple. I would recommend, if you are worried about doing this, as this does not come with a single instruction, you look on the internet and you tube for guidance on how to do this. Also a top tip, as this involves you having to take out a load of tiny teenie weenie screws, a magnetic screwdriver is a good idea, and a small cup or even an egg cup to hold said screws, as they are that tiny, they are easy to loose.I didn't need to use the tools that came with it, as already had the necessary ones, but these have been added to my toolkit as I can see they can come in useful.

Possibly incompatible with 2TB Samsung M9T but works with everything else, great fit in Macbook Pro early 2011
As noted by others the enclosure for the DVD drive (to turn it into an external USB DVD drive) is flimsy and poorly constructed, but personally I don't care, I haven't used the DVD drive for a year or more. The drive caddy itself fits perfectly into my Macbook Pro early 2011.As to drive compatability: I first tried a Samsung M9T 2TB 9.5mm SATA 2.5 inch drive (ST2000LM003) and thought it worked fine, under light use I didn't notice problems for a couple of weeks. But when I tried to make a backup of the drive, it disappeared from the finder and I would have to reboot to get it back again. Working in IT I have a great supply of test parts and I tried other drives with no problems, and settled for a Samsung 1TB ST1000LM024. I have stress-tested that drive for weeks now with no problems whatsoever. I suspect the 2TB drive has a too high current requirement (2.3W peak) while the 1TB drive only requires 2.2W. All the other drives only require ~1.8-2.2W and didn't have any problems at all, and I would have chosen a Seagate SSHD 1TB (2.2W) if it hadn't been so darn noisy (see my review of that annoying drive)Worthwhile checking the tech specs of the drive you're considering before going through this work...The vendor was great and responsive and gave me a new caddy but that didn't fix the problem.Tools provided are perfectly adequate (but you need a pair of tweezers to hold the screws as the bits aren't magnetic), and the only gripe might be that there are no instructions for those who are not used to taking their Macs apart.

Good after some tinkering
I planed on replacing the optical drive in my macbook pro 17" early 2011 model. My idea was to put an SSD in the optical bay and keep the HDD where it was but after putting the SSD in I was unable to boot to the SSD where i already had OSX installed. I then tinkered some and realised that I needed to put the HDD in the optical bay and the SSD where the HDD was. After doing that I was able to boot from any disc and I'm now very happy. The case for the optical drive is good as well but I doubt that I will ever be able to get it back out since it snapped together very tight. I also needed to run a terminal command to be able to use "DVD Player" but that wasn't so bad since I use VLC anyway but since the VLC version out when I did this was 2.1.2 I was unable to play dvds from VLC because of a bug in that version which confused me to believe that it was an issue with the optical drive. In conclusion, It's a good product if your not afraid of opening up you computer, unplugging cables and unscrewing parts.

Great build, Great product, Great fit.
I ordered this item as I wanted to breath life into my 2008 Macbook Pro, Stage one was to fit a 250GB SSD, Stage two was to replace my DVD with a 1TB HDD for storage. Stage 3 is to install 8GB Ram. This is the stage two review.I received my adapter two days early, (nod to a very fast delivery) so I quickly fitted it using a Youtube video to install it. well its don't have any instructions so I will assume that its for it professionals. the screwdriver and little plastic device which I don't know the name of works a treat and are made of good quality materials, I only wish that the screw bits was magnetic as that would be a great advantage when removing and replacing the screws.. As for the product, well it fitted in fine and worked first time. The DVD was fitted into the drive is working a treat, Im afraid that the youtube video did not have this part on the movie but its easy to fit. I will download the driver for recording DVDs later today but as a player it worked right out of the box. So far so good, I can highly recommend this product to other Apple users.Youtube link I used https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCLENHnvfmk
