Don't get burned buying the cheap alternatives.
I needed a USB to PS/2 converter for a small form factor Dell Optiplex 760 which I've been using as a HTPC.As the Dell 760 has no PS/2 inputs and I have a perfectly good RF wireless keyboard and mouse I thought the cheap option would be to buy a USB to PS/2 converter. I had made the mistake of buying one of the NewLink branded cheap adapters which you can get for under £1.50, the trouble is that in my case I found the cheap adaptor really unreliable. The NewLink adaptor repeatedly died during use and you had to un-plug it and plug it back in to revive it, the "\" backslash key didn't work and the mouse would often have a mind of its own.I gave up on the cheap NewLink adaptor, bought this Startech one instead and its worked like a charm. All the keyboard keys work, the mouse works fine and I've had absolutely no problems with it at all. At the time of purchase this was under 8 quid with free super saver delivery from Amazon, a bargain.

Works perfectly with my Dell KVM Switch
Having read the disappointing reviews of some of the cheaper alternatives to this product I was left deciding between this one and the slightly more expensive Belkin. I actually decided to go for the Belkin based on reviews, and didn't realise I'd ordered the wrong one until it arrived. It works perfectly, just plug it in and you can use a PS2 Mouse and keyboard with a computer that doesn't have a PS2 port on it.The computer I bought this for has only 1 PS2 port (mouse OR keyboard), but I needed both and I wanted to control it in a server room using an 8-Port Dell KVM switch. I just plugged it in, no drivers needed, and it worked perfectly for my needs. My Mouse is a startdard MS Intellimouse and my Keyboard a years old (at least 8) PS2 Mechanical Dell.

Works well... but you may need a powered USB hub
This does what it says, and does it well, allowing me to use my old PS/2 keyboard and mouse with a modern USB laptop. However, it does need quite a bit of power. When I first bought it, I had real problems getting it to work via my old (non-powered) USB hub, and it was quite erratic. Plugging it directly into the laptop solved this, but wouldn't allow me to use my other devices. I've since purchased a USB hub with a separate power adapter and it's working perfectly!

It works
Too easy to buy 'adapters' which are not converters - this one does what it's supposed to do and allows two devices to connect to one USB port. Make sure you connect your mouse/keyboard to the correct socket - the symbols are there if you look. Well made and don't see it breaking any time soon. This little gizmo just works.Update March 2016I've just bought a second from the same company = 50p cheaper after 3 years! The original is still going on a laptop. The new one is for a new PC with USB only and I'm very keen in keeping my old MS Ergo keyboard with PS2 plug. Same positive comments apply.

Far better than the cheaper alternatives, worth every pennies
I looked for a long time for a good converter, my main use is with an old, but very reliable, KVM only using PS2 connections. After reading the reviews on many other cheaper products I decided to put my money on the table (these are twice the price of the alternatives) and I do not regret it. Works perfectly with my Dell R310 and R720.

nice idea but----- don't expect too much
Bought this because the positive reviews but those people must be pretty limited in their needs. Although this works on a BASIC level - that is to say a PS2 KB & Mouse will work as initially intended back in 1980 all the current bells & whistles of recent generations of KB & mouse with programable functions and scroll wheels and focus shifting with pointer etc are stopped DEAD in their track because "Windows" will not recognize their presence when booting and will only load HID (basic Human Interface Device) drivers so you only get a very basic keyboard and mouse.I am using this with a KVM switch with 3 other computers with 2 x PS2 sockets so cannot really change everything so I have used the single PS2 port for the KB and the mouse connects through the USB but to enhance I have had to use another mouse program (free) called "Katmouse.exe" which actually gives me back 90% of useable mouse functions.Oscar AKA Steve Caner

Works exactly and advertised
Purchased for an old PS2 keyboard and works perfectly. Another bonus is the keyboard is now 'plug and play' rather than having to reboot after plugging in

does not work as intended when tested on a laptop, waiting to test on desktop
I wasn't optimistic and expected some issues using this adapter for an old xp era keyboard in windows 10 (Samsung SDM4510P).. The special keys at the top of the keyboard for volume, cd functions and shutdown do not work.I also expected potential issues if connected to a laptop just to test, or if the usb adapter required an extra adapter that provides a little more power in order to get it working at all, esp if both a ps2 mouse and ps2 keyboard were connected at once, or for all keys only to work on a desktop (laptop keyboard vs startech adapter), or windows 10 not always having full compatibility.I can't root all these out for problem keys just yet, as for now I can only test the adapter on an acer laptop. Other than the special keys, the few others that do not work also are Caps lock, the left alt key, the left arrow, back slash, and F2. The rest seem ok.The problematic keys never wore out before, so I highly suspect it's the adapter. I get the same result whether connecting to the end that is labelled for mouse. It doesn't matter which end you connect to the keyboard for the working keys to work, although perhaps a ps2 mouse only works via one end.I am now considering trying another cable if I find no workaround and nothing changes when tested on a desktop. I will update this review if I am able to in future. It would have probably been better if Startech used drivers, given most of my very old plug and play devices are now defunct. I think you are probably more likely to have success with this adapter with the simplest of older keyboards with very few light up keys and no special keys as mentioned. Given the working keys seem to respond for me without an issue, it may still be worth trying out if you haven't had much luck with adapters.

It Works Well But Is Wobbly
I have been a Kinesis keyboard user since the product came to market. For writers and editors with small hands nothing compares to specially designed ergonomic keyboard. I had to upgrade to Windows 10 and there was no PS2 port. I have tried adapters which did not work well.Since there was no open USB plug on the motherboard, I had to buy a short USB cable, wire the adapter out of the PC case to connect to the external USB ports on the back of the PC In order to do this I had to push out one of the open slots on the back of the PC. If for some reason I have to remove the PS2 plugs or plug in a new one its kind of wobbly, otherwise it works fine. There is nothing else that I find that works better.StarTech also seems to be good brand for other items I bought. Thank you for making it so we don't have to give up the best keyboard ever made.

IT WORKS!!!
I bought a new Dell computer (XPS 8930 Special Edition) running Win10-x64, and my trusty ol' Logic Controls (now Bematech) LK1800M (132-Keys, PS/2 Interface, 2-Track Magnetic Strip Rreader and Fully Programmable 2-level keyboard), which I program with many e-addys, usernames, etc.) keyboard would not work on it because it didn't have a PS/2 port.I have been using this keyboard since March, 2008!I tried many of the active adapters available, such as the Sanoxy, etc., and NONE of them worked properly. So I contacted the Bematech support team, and after trying many things, they sent me a newer and similar keyboard (LK8000) that connects by USB.Well, this did not work properly either! While looking around here at amazon.com, I came upon this gem of an adapter, and decided to give it a try.Once it arrived, I installed it, having to use a male-to-male USB 2.0 cord to plug it into an available USB 2.0 port on the back of the desktop, and LO AND BEHOLD!!...IT WORKS!...FAULTLESSLY!!!Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU, StarTech!!

There are external cable adapters that do the same job but this is a nice tidy permanent solution for this PC
This can connect via internal or external USB. Your system will need to support boot initializing of USB to work (older motherboards don't have this feature, so it cannot be used to replace a broken keyboard port), tho generally if it lacks PS/2 ports this won't be a problem. I'm using it with a Dell that has no PS/2 ports, so I can use an older keyboard. There are external cable adapters that do the same job but this is a nice tidy permanent solution for this PC.The internal pin header is not labeled but match it to the diagram in the instructions. I wasn't sure on this so contacted their tech support -- took a couple tries to get my problem across but their guy was patient and once he understood my question I got the answer right away. If you're still not sure, or your motherboard's USB header is not available or not labeled, use the external USB connector instead (just run a short cable out the back to any available USB port). Thanks to StarTech for their many solutions to these oddball problems.
