How to Apply Magnetic N Plates

The Magnetic N Plates arrive in packages of three. Only two will be required to be displayed on the vehicle in order to comply with Irish driving regulations. The remaining N Plate can be retained as a spare. Prior to applying the N Plate, ensure that the area upon the bonnet is dry and clear of any moisture. To apply an N Plate, simply place the magnetic N Plate upon a flat metal surface upon the car and flatten the N Plate using the palm of your hand so as to ensure the magnetic surface is gripping with full effect. Ensure that when placing the N Plate upon the surface that the area is flat and free from curves which may reduce the magnets effectiveness. The magnetic N Plate will attract to the metal surface and is ready for use. Should you wish to remove the N Plate at any stage, the N Plate can be peeled away from any of its four corners.

Who is Required to Display N Plates?

A person granted a first full driving licence on or after 1st August 2014 must display N-plates on the vehicle for a period of 2 years, and during that period display N-plates on any other vehicle in respect of which they get a driving licence.

The novice period applies only once, ie someone who holds a driving licence for a category of vehicle and who after a period of two years becomes entitled to drive another category, does not become a novice in respect of the new category.
