Never had one of these; how is it that it doesn't leak if the closed chug cap is turned down since it doesn't look like it screws on?

It does screw on and has internal threads so you don't feel them. Zero leaks from this quality bottle. These are well made (and better be due to the price).

Part of the straw is exposed which I did not realize - it’s not very sanitary. Can you link a different top with straw that has a dust cover??

No I do not fit my hand in the mouth hole. You need a special brush
