Excellent Body of Theology
John Gill was a preacher and theologian from the 18th century. His parents and community recognized his fast learning and brilliant mind at an early age and fostered this in him. He learned the biblical languages young and quickly excelled into Pastoral duties, all with a passion for the Lord. This Body of Divinity is not organized like today's Systematic Theologies. This is not negative per se, but one should know that these older writers usually wrote in very long blocks without many section breaks. Also, when he quotes Scripture he does not always cite the specific reference, but puts the verse in quotations marks. This is college level (or higher) reading, and in many parts Gill assumes the reader has prior familiarity with theology. Gill's writing style is comfortable, understandable but theologically thick and erudite in its own rite.On the whole, this Body of Doctrinal and Practical Divinity is a must have on your shelf from a man who was dedicated to the Lord, displaying that dedication through a passionate and academic discourse on doctrine. I purchased this Body of Divinity to have the insight from an earlier generation of theology - and it has not ceased to pay dividends! Pro rege et soli Deo gloria!
