concise explanations
i picked this up closer to when I started learning Japanese and it's explanations of the grammar were very understandable, also gives you example sentences so you know how to use them, supplementary vocabulary also.

One of the best Japanese grammar guides out there
I've been referring back to Tae Kim's website for more than 15 years so I finally decided to buy the book. Don't be fooled by the ugly cover, this is one of the best Japanese grammar guides out there. It will take you from the absolute basics to more advanced grammar, building up step by step. The explanations are all very clear and help to make sense of why things work the way they do. I only wish the design and print quality was a bit better.

Great Book for Grammar
Great book, covers all the grammar in a clear simple way without all the jargon. Would recommend for anyone learning Japanese wether self taught or taking classes.

A must buy
I read the user review "Just press Print" here and was cautious about buying this, but for a reasonable price I could continue reading this offline. I felt that I wanted to make notes and flick back and forth, and having a physical copy would help me with this. I haven't been disappointed with my purchase, and I haven't found the issue where one word is left on a page like the previous review suggested, so maybe they have given the book a bit more love since then. There isn't an index but there's a contents page and everything is organised and labelled well. I just remove one star because the quality of the Amazon printed books (CreateSpace) is of sub-par build quality; the cover feels a bit cheap and the pages are a bit wavy, but the quality of the printed text is good. It's larger and thicker than I thought it would be, and is filled with excellent material. A must have for any Japanese language learner.

Better than expected!
Reading some of the reviews on this book, I was worried that it would end up being a cheap & nasty book. But instead, even though this book is based on the author's website, this book is laid out nicely to suit a printed book, instead of just being a screenprint/dump of the website.Further, the contents are useful & cover a lot of ground, so if you're a beginner/intermediate Japanese speaker like me, I strongly recommend this book. Its approach to teach you proper Japanese is interesting and logical, and I feel that its use of hiragana & katakana & kanji from the beginning is a very good way to get a person used to the trickier parts of the language right away.

A revolutionary new way to learn Japanese.
This book teaches you Japanese by - well - teaching you Japanese! Not by teaching you in the "normal" way of grammar and vocabulary so you can translate English into Japanese, but by explaining how Japanese works, and how sentences are constructed. The possibly frightening thing for beginners is that the writing system is introduced and used in full - Hiragana (for Japanese words), Katakana (for words of foreign origin) and Kanji (the characters of Chinese origin which explain the meaning and origin of all vocabulary) too, right from the beginning. As someone who learnt Japanese from a combination of books, university (UK) and immersion in the language, and has never properly got on top of Kanji, this book is a wonderful tool to make life easier for anyone wanting to really know and understand Japanese.Thoroughly recommended!Noel Howlett(Currently teaching Beginners Japanese with U3A)

perfect for helping understand japanese that need context/structure
I have never been fond of textbooks that teach useful phrases over teaching grammar and other necessary structures to understand a language, as I learned english from text books thus got context on how things sound then later learned the alphabet and grammar. English is not my first language so have a hard time learning new language without having the same contexts but also do not have 18 plus years to learn another languageAlthough the information in this book is free, its great for those of us who get eye strain from staring at screens with harsh backgrounds for long periods of time.

Best resource for Japanese grammar.
Straight to the point. Doesn’t sugar coat things. Written in a way an English native can understand. Doesn’t promise “fluent in 3 days” “learn all 2300 kanji in 60 seconds” or “it’s gonna be easy” aha. For those dedicated to the pretty arduous task of learning Japanese and it’s oh so unique grammar, I highly recommend this book.
