Can I switch the direction that the cards fan? I would consider the "front" to be the ID card side. The fanning is not properly visible that way.

The cards don’t fan. When you press the side lever up , the cards pop up and you select the card you want to use. It is small and compact but protects the cards from copying them

Is it comfortable to keep in your back pocket like a regular wallet?

It is harder than a regular leather wallet and I always carry mine in a front pocket. I have not noticed any discomfort in a front pocket. I would imagine that any discomfort from having it in your back pocket would come when you sit down, just like a regular wallet. There shouldn't be any discomfort while standing up though.
