Does the system know when you are away/have left the home so that it will adjust the temperature like the Nest or do you have to tell it when you leave?

This thermostat doesn't have occupancy sensors. So it cannot sense your presence. You need to program the schedule ad per your timing or you need to manually adjust it from the thermostat, website or using app on smart phone.

On the box its says " compatible with heat pumps".

Is there a "Run Schedule" button if you temporarily go "off schedule" by manually changing target temperature? Nest doesn't have this.

Yes, when you change the temperature to something other than what is scheduled, the schedule is placed on hold to the specific temperature you set until the next phase in the schedule (you can also set a permanent hold). Once on hold, you can simply press the Cancel Hold button on the thermostat (or phone, or website) to resume the current schedule.

Does this work with gas furnaces? I noticed some reviews here and other places people said it didn't, some said it did. Thanks

Yes it works with gas furnaces. It is the best thermostat ever if you want to change temperature remotely.

I have this same model thermostat at home and like it because it’s easy to read and program so I bought one for my cabin.

This unit is great! It s very simple to install if you have a C ( common) wire. If not be careful of the rip offs from electrician. Paid $150 for the install in California of a new C wire and only $60 in Florida. FYI. We installed this unit and another one ($100 less expensive) the main difference with the Lower Noel is the ability to see the humidity level of your house. The other one does the trick just fine as well. The app is simple and user friendly. Definitely get it if you travel a lot and want to change your setting remotely.

I would like to give this RTH9580WF1005 a wonderful 5 star rating, but this 3rd purchase of this same model was a real let down in quality and functionality. Maybe because it was sold as refurbished? The thermostat unit won’t stay attached to the slightly curved back plate. It simply refuses to latch onto it. I managed to remedy this with some thick outdoor type double sided tape. The left side of the touchscreen didn’t fully light up until I taped the unit to the backplate because it wasn’t making sufficient contact with it. Since installation, it still says “waiting for update” and can’t display the weather, one of the features I specifically looked for in addition to the time and date display. Otherwise, wiring, setup and registration went quickly and painlessly. It’s a great product when you get one that works and I would still recommend it. Update: the update that I anticipated would happen at the time of installation finally happened the following day. This thermostat is now displaying the weather info.

We like Honeywell thermostat and we bought 9 pieces from different sellers to install in each room in the house. We would like to say that we are quite happy with it so far. It is easy to use and to control from your iPhone. Now we can control our home temps while we are away.
