The author clearly knows the industry (as an academic and participant). I bought it for my daughter, who aspires to a career in the industry. She's learned a lot about what people in various jobs do. It's helped her shape her decisions on majors to consider in college and professional degrees worth considering. The book is written as if addressed to an artist - with advice on how to choose professionals to work with. I think that approach helps tie the content together, but does not limit the utility of the advice whatsoever. It does not seem like a 'text book', but more like a book of insider advice from a trusted expert. I'm reading it now myself - not looking for a career switch - just enjoying the read! Unbeatable Knowledge and insight in the industry
This books is so chocked full of information and knowledge about the music industry it's hard to do it justice in a review. If you are interested in exploring or being in the music industry as an artist or any other avenue this book is pure gold.

Gold.
Excited... also pissed. This type of book should have a decent hardcover. Please don't send covers you printed at Office Depot and quickly wrapped around the book. This is art, this is education. The cover feels like it came out of an hp inkjet printer. Never do that again. The book is gold tho. Can be a point of reference forever. Stop dropping music without reading it front to back or you are at a disadvantage. Seriously tho if you drop another edition spend money on the look of the book that matters. Must buy otherwise.

Great started music biz. However, is lacking the continuously changing landscape of the industry.
The industry is now changing faster than these books can keep up with. The book offers great fundamental knowledge but cannot keep with the continuously changing landscape of the industry. The laws, AI, marketing and promo are changing almost every few months. I wish there was a way this book could be updated more frequently

Must-own music biz book for anyone serious about a career in music!
I use this as a textbook for my undergrad music law class. It is a must-read for anyone exploring a career in the music business. Now on its 11th edition, it provides an up-to-date in-depth view into how the business works, terminology/lingo, as well as insider knowledge about what to watch out for in negotiating and managing your music career. It gets pretty in the weeds on legal aspects but is written in a way that a layperson can easily understand.
