Very good book for Urdu lovers who speak Hindi. In fact most powerful book for Urdu learning...

For Hindi readers who want to acquire a good Urdu vocabulary, this is a great starting point. The author explains nicely the origin and significance of Arabic and Persian words used in Urdu speech and writing.Like all other human endeavors there are some shortcomings. There could have been more use of Arabic scripts for those who are learning to read the language and will encounter these words in writing. For example this would make the chapter on "Milte Julte shabd" much easier to follow.At some points it is difficult to agree with her. On page 376 she takes issue with "badlav" for change (according to her one should say "tabdili", since "badlav" is not correct Arabic). But isn't the whole point of Urdu the mixture of foreign and indigenous elements, such as the Arabic "badal" and the Hindi suffix "-av"?There are also some mistakes. On page 244, she says that the "ranga" in "rangamancha" is taken from Persian "rang" (color). But "ranga" in the sense of stage is good old Sanskrit. As evidenced by Sanskrit drama, theatre on stages were an important part of ancient Indian culture. In fact Sanskrit "ranga" is actually related to Persian "rang" in the sense that it has the same Indo-European ancestor, but certainly is not a loan from Persian.In spite of these minor shortcomings, this is a good book which will be useful to learners.

Beyond my expectations. I am really happy to own the Rekhta books for learning URDU.

Not very helpful

If anybody is beginner and want to learn urdu words for writing shayri & gazal than this book is amazing for you.
