A great resource for students providing an introduction to retail design
As with most books in the ava series, Retail Design follows a simple yet effective layout making the book easy to digest. The chapters are presented with straightforward and relevant language in a logical format, allowing easy reference with interesting and diverse case studies that reinforce the messages being portrayed. The first chapter on branding provides a cursory overview of the subject and whilst sufficient in the context of retail design it would be advisable to people interested in this to consult extra sources for a more in-depth discussion on the subject. That said, in context the branding section is very relevant and holds key information for aspiring designers. The book provides sound examples of how different retail sectors, sites and environments (each with their own chapter) influence and shape the design of retail space. The level of detail covered in each chapter along with examples is both useful and inspiring. The penultimate chapter on methods of organising space could benefit from a greater depth of exploration into the principles of organising retail space. The techniques covered to create effective and user-friendly layouts are good but limited. I would advise people interested in this area to treat this book as suitable for providing an overview in the subject but not a comprehensive resource.Overall, for someone studying interior design or interested in design (retail, interior or otherwise) this book provides an easy to read and informative text on the subject. I would definitely recommend it for prospective students and students who are relate to this field of study. Practitioners of this area in design will find the book useful albeit an overview to an extremely detailed and diverse subject.NB: It should be noted that the majority of information, examples and case studies are for a Western market.

Excellent intro to Interior Design in relation to Retail Design!
I really enjoyed reading this book because it provides a clear introduction to interior design and clearly applies the key concepts to the retail world. The need for retail outlets to follow fashion trends and customers' aspirations is clearly explained and analysed. The chapters are well structured, making the content easy to follow. There is a particularly useful section about branding, which is an essential concept that needs to be studied and understood by interior designers in order to create suitable retail spaces and experiences.I also like the way the author has divided and analysed the different types of retail sites, from high-street shops, to shopping centres and department stores. The comprehensive descriptions of the ways in which retail environments are organised are also particularly helpful. The book is packed full of case studies, images and drawings, which make the ideas much easier to grasp for people, like myself, who are approaching the subject for the first time.
