It's actually really impressive how well this thing plays out of the box. I did not bother trying the reeds or ligature it came with. I've tried Chinese reeds before and they're trash. I use Vandoren Red or Blues reeds and a Rovner ligature. The mouthpiece is actually surprisingly not bad. It looks like a copy of a Selmer C and plays ok, but I still recommend using a different mouthpiece. I've played on a lot of beginner saxes that were the same price, and this is definitely the most functional instrument. The quickest way to check for leaks is to see how easily the sax can play low Bb and if it can play beyond altissimo F without cracking any notes. This sax effortlessly plays low Bb and altissimo F# play using both the F# key and side key. The only drawback is the tone. The sax doesn't sound like a normal sax, it sounds a bit dull for lack of a better word. It's almost like the sound doesn't reverberate enough in the instrument. I've tried different mouthpieces, and I couldn't get the tone I wanted that is typical of a Selmer or Yamaha. I don't know if it's because of the material the sax is made of or something else. However, this is definitely the best sax for the price. If I had to pick between a functional instrument that doesn't sound perfect, or a used beginner Yamaha/Selmer that doesn't play well, I'd definitely pick the prior. I think actually being able to play the instrument should supersede what it sounds like.

This is a complete set of everything you need to start playing saxophone. You get the saxophone, reeds, carrying case and other accessories including a stand. I have played clarinet for many years and wanted to try saxophone. This is a great starting instrument for beginners. It's not $1000 quality, but it is good enough to practice with. I love the red color and gold trim. Overall this saxophone looks great. The buttons are easy to reach. The mouthpiece and reeds work. The saxophone plays good. Remember, this is a saxophone under $500. So quality is average and great for beginners. I am still learning how to play, so I can't say the squeaky sounds are from the quality. Get this saxophone if you want a great beginner saxophone that is everything you need to start.
