Easy to setup and use as a home network backup device. There are lots more features available for complex networking but I didn't need that and frankly couldn't understand all the terminology.

I had a WD EX4100 and it doesn’t even compare to Qnap. Now the setup does take sometime and you must know your IP address in order to login it and the site link. The monthly updates and security and features even VPN and Plex for media sharing. It’s the best. I highly recommend you get you one.

The hardware is solid and the box is compact and looks great. The 2.5gbit network connection means that network speed more or less matches the speed of a HDD, which is nice, and it is really all you need unless you setup raid. The CPU is not fast but adequate for the job and I don't see it being a bottleneck. The qnap software that came bundled with it is the source of a number of problems. First it constantly writes a database of logs which wakes up one of the disks. This means that unless you put a M.2 disk as your first drive, this thing is noisy as hell, constantly doing disk writes. Since the disk constantly spins it produces lots of heat; I am not sure what this means for disk reliability long term. It is also incapable of saturating the 2.5 Gbit/s interface with the default software. One other aspect is that qnap uses a weird LVM format for the first disk where it also places system stuff. The consequence of this is that you can't take the first disk out and access the data elsewhere easily. That to me is very scary, after all this is where I backup all my data. Since software is the problem and since this thing is pretty much a PC, if you are tech savvy you can install Linux which I did. After that all the noise issues went away, and the file serving speed with smb went from 150 to 280MB/s which is pretty much the network max. By default the ram size is too small, but you should not splurge for the more expensive versions because of that. This being a PC you should just buy standard sodimm to expand capacity to 16GB for $25. Now, given that I had to expand the ram, put Linux on this and configure all the software myself, would I have been better off with a mini PC? Probably, yes, therefore the 3 stars.

Great QNAP for the money, especially if you wait for an open box deal. I own a Synology as well, but they tend to be more expensive. I will say that the interface is not as clan as Synology is, however.
