Facinating book!
This book is a fabulous book to have on your shelf. It is great for people wanting a brief overview of history. I read this from cover to cover, writing down historical events that I wanted to go and research more into. Really love this book.

Just the thing for the "photographic memory"
There's a thousand items with dates - and it would be easy to memorize all these if I wasn't a moron. I recognize most of the stuff in here so far - but I often find I had the dates garbled up.So.... what year was Alexander the Great's father killed?Wish I would have had this back in high school or college.

Great book
This book was a fun read. It doesn't go into too much detail but gives you the "so what" and a greater understanding of how history has unfolded over time.

Coffee Table Look at History
It's difficult to take a book like this seriously, as if history could be resumed in a coffee table book. The editor says in his introduction that certain events and people were of crucial importance in the development of history in contrast to the view that history is a continuous process of forces that does not rely on individuals. This is may be true but encapsulating them in an idea like 1,001 days is pretty ludicrous. The emphasis is on Western and modern history. Some events are obvious, such as the Fall of the Bastille or the murder of Tsar Nicholas during the Russian Revolution, but others are frivolous, such as Bob Dylan's first appearance in public in a folk club or the fight between Mohamed Ali and Joe Frazier in Manila. Some of the opinions are also questionable. Was Romanian dictator Ceausescu really overthrown because he refused to follow Gorbachov's reform program? If the Battle of Agincourt had no long-term consequences, as the book claims, then why does it appear?

The introduction alone was worth buying the book for.
Borrowed the book from my local library then found it useful to dip into for a reference work so purchased a second user version. Ingredients great and comments useful.
