Mennonite Girls Can Cook

Home cooking at itโs coziest.
This book is great for anyone interested in simple but delicious cooking and that enjoys reading stories from the contributors. There are interesting stories throughout and good pictures of the recipes. The recipes are good for those learning to cook as they are explained well but it is also good for the seasoned cook that wants to try something new. I love this style of cooking - hearty, nutritious, and comforting.

Exactly what I was looking for.
I have been looking for a book that contained recipes for all of my favorite foods from my childhood with modern ingredients. Every single recipe I wanted was in this book. From my heart, thank you. My grandparents families were Germans from Russia and Mennonite. I grew up next door to my grandparents and just miss them so much. I'm looking forward to making all these recipes and sharing this food and their stories with my family.

Good cookbook, but not quite a 5
I was very happy to find these recipes. I can't give the book a 5 though, because the information isn't always accurate based on my experience with "Russian" Mennonite food. Please note that I am still very happy to have this book! Here are two examples of how I disagree. My first example is that the authors basically say that wareniki (they may spell that differently is a cottage cheese dumpling, but in fact cottage was only one filling--my grandmother made several different types, and there are many others. The root of that word simply means boiled, which they are, and they are most likely of Ukranina origin, as much of that cuisine is of Russian/Ukrainian orgigin. They are basically a filled dumpling made with a kind of soft noodle dough. Once they are fried, they are perogies (the root of that is to fry), although when we fried up leftover cottage cheese wareniki we just called them fried wareniki. Also, I'd like to point out that busy mothers back then didn't have time to make wareniki round; mine cut the dough into squares and made them into triangles, which was much faster before they came out with perogie makers (I'm now dairy & gluten free, so can't eat this fabulous dish, or I'd buy one of those gadgets.)The other is with borscht--the Mennonites had a variety of non-beet soups they called Borscht, including red borscht (there is one example in the books and various types of summer borscht--my grandmother's summer borscht contained green beens, unlike other recipes I've seen, and she came straight from the old country.)However, if, like me, your grandparent or great grandparent passed away without leaving written records of those recipes and his/her children don't have all of them written down either, this still worth buying. There even a few gluten free recipes I'm going to try for my gluten free child.

One of my favorite and enjoyable recipe books!
I really enjoy this personalized recipe book. The beautiful photography and biographies of authors families gives you a special connection. The royalties going to feed children around the world charity is a real Plus. The recipes are wonderful and some have become my โgo to favoritesโ. Check out page 150!!! My only negative is the splotchy white label on the cover is distracting and takes away from the beauty of the book. I have the original book without it and was disappointed to see it on the cover when I ordered more, as I love giving them as gifts for bridal showers. But that wonโt keep me from continuing my affection for gifting it to friends and family!

Excellent book!
I have read their blog for years and years and this is a great cookbook! While not always the healthiest recipes they are very ingenious and use a lot of great techniques

Great book, great recipes!
My husband and I recently moved to a Mennonite town and one of our neighbors brought us Zweiback to welcome us. Another has been talking about making green bean soup. And all over town, there are meals advertised with foods we have never heard of. I decided to order this book to try my hand at some of these great recipes, and they are wonderful. I love the recipes in the book, as well as the "devotional" items that are included. I also think that it is wonderful that these ladies donate all of their royalty fees to feeding hungry children. It is a great recipe book that helps a great cause. Many people mentioned that found the metric measurements confusing, I for one did not. They are separated by a "/".I decided to order more of these books to give as gifts.

The book was as described. Great condition.
I really like this book but I had no idea it was a duplicate of one I had just purchased. I'll keep it anyway and gift it to some one I know loves to cook too.

Great recipe idea's
I was told about this book & great recipes from a friend in Canada, so I tried a few recipes from the website & found them pretty good, so decided to buy the book. The only quibble I have is the recipes with flour, as it will either say -all purpose flour, or flour ! as we only have Self raising & Plain flour for baking (other than bread) it is trial & error, guess work, & some common sense using it. I have tried about 7 recipes from the book now & they are fantastic & some really easy too, like the Ham & Egg cups, simple, quick & every tasty. Farmer Sausage Quiche, another tasty meal. Meatloaf, hmm, really nice, I could go on & on about this book & it's contents, but I think buying it & trying them out for yourself you will love it just as much as my family & I do.
