**"Baby Sign Language Made Easy: 101 Signs to Start Communicating with Your Child Now" Review** **"Baby Sign Language Made Easy: 101 Signs to Start Communicating with Your Child Now"** by **Nancy Cadjan** is a highly accessible and practical guide for parents eager to introduce sign language to their babies and toddlers. The book provides an easy-to-follow approach for using baby sign language to enhance communication before verbal speech begins, a technique that’s been gaining popularity for its ability to reduce frustration and promote early learning. ### **Content and Structure** The book is structured to be user-friendly, with clear, step-by-step instructions for learning and teaching 101 essential signs. It starts with an introduction to the benefits of baby sign language, such as improved communication, reduced tantrums, and stronger bonding between parent and child. The author emphasizes how babies, even as young as 6 months, are capable of learning and using simple signs to express their needs and emotions long before they can speak. Each sign is introduced with a brief description of its meaning, followed by clear, illustrated instructions on how to make the sign. The illustrations are simple, showing the proper hand and finger positions, which makes it easy for parents to follow along. Some editions also feature photos of babies performing the signs, which adds an extra layer of visual clarity. The book is organized into categories such as "Food and Drink," "Daily Activities," "Emotions," and "Animals," making it easy to learn the most relevant signs based on your child’s immediate needs. This categorization is incredibly helpful because it allows parents to focus on signs that will be most useful in their daily routines, like signs for “milk,” “eat,” or “more.” ### **Ease of Use** One of the most notable strengths of **"Baby Sign Language Made Easy"** is its simplicity. The language used is straightforward, and the book’s format makes it easy to pick up and start using immediately. Each sign is accompanied by a brief description, making it simple to understand the sign’s meaning, and the step-by-step directions are easy to implement. The book doesn’t overwhelm you with unnecessary detail, keeping the focus on practicality. The concise nature of the book is perfect for busy parents who don’t have hours to dedicate to learning. Instead, it encourages a gradual, stress-free approach to incorporating baby sign language into everyday interactions. You can start small with a few essential signs and gradually expand your child’s vocabulary as they grow and their needs evolve. ### **Educational Value** The value of **"Baby Sign Language Made Easy"** extends beyond just teaching signs—it’s also about fostering a deeper connection with your child. Using sign language allows babies to communicate their wants and needs more effectively, which can lead to less frustration and fewer tantrums. It’s a wonderful tool for early childhood development, helping babies build a foundation for language skills while promoting cognitive and emotional development. The signs themselves are carefully selected to represent key aspects of a baby’s world, from basic needs like food and sleep to emotions like happy, sad, or angry. The emphasis on communication through body language encourages babies to become more aware of their own gestures, setting the stage for improved social and verbal communication skills as they get older. ### **Pros:** - **Clear, step-by-step instructions** with easy-to-follow illustrations - **Practical and user-friendly** format—ideal for busy parents - **Wide range of useful signs**, including those for food, emotions, and daily activities - **Promotes early communication** and reduces frustration by helping babies express their needs - **Strengthens the bond** between parent and child - Great for **beginner sign language learners** and parents who want to start immediately ### **Cons:** - The book doesn’t go into deep detail on the **linguistic aspects of sign language**, so it may not be ideal for those looking for a comprehensive study of American Sign Language (ASL) - Some readers may want more **cultural context** or advanced signs, especially as their child grows older and their communication needs become more complex - The **illustrations** are simple, but there might be a slight learning curve for parents who have never used sign language before ### **Final Verdict** Overall, **"Baby Sign Language Made Easy: 101 Signs to Start Communicating with Your Child Now"** is a fantastic resource for parents looking to enrich their child’s early communication skills. The book provides a straightforward, engaging way to teach baby sign language and offers practical tips for incorporating it into everyday life. All the basics and more
This book is everything I was looking for and more. It’s organized very well and the pictures along with descriptions of each sign make it so easy to learn. There are lots of extra tips throughout the book that really help with how to effectively teach your baby like recommendations of books and songs. And I absolutely love that it explains what it might look like as your child is learning each sign so that you know what to look out for. Very informative!

Signing made easy
Although some of the signs are difficult, and I did have to follow up with videos, it is still a great book. It gives signs to popular songs and children’s books as well which makes forming the habit of signing easier.

Parents and Toddler LOVE This Book
Our daughter LOVES this book, and so do we. We had dabbled in sign language before getting this book, but once we added this in we quickly found the use of sign language in our home exploded. Our daughter is now 16 months old and easily has more than 40 sign language words. It's an incredible thing to be able to communicate with your preverbal child. I never would have known all the things she notices or feels, if it weren't for sign language. Now she can tell us that she feels happy, or notices the sounds of the birds in the morning. It also reduces frustration and meltdowns because she can tell us things that would otherwise be hard to guess, like she wants us to play music. I'd recommend this book to any parent or caregiver. Unlike other books, this book has very clear illustrations for how to do the sign and useful memory tips. Like, "mouse" involves tapping your nose which seems random and forgettable until the book explains that it's like a mouse's wiggling nose. Those little details have helped me remember signs, which then lets me teach them to my daughter. The book also uses realistic illustrations of cute kids, which attracts my daughter's attention. She likes to flip through the book on her own and look at them. The other thing I like about this book is she offers ideas for activities that could involve the signs that you've learned, like how to sign along with popular songs (Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, I Like to Eat, Eat, Eat Apples and Bananas) and classic board books.

Great gift book for new parents
Bought as a gift for a new mom and dad. They were very excited to start learning some simple signs to use with their new baby. Love the detail in the large pictures, makes it simple to learn and see what to do. Well received by the new parents and they didn’t have one, so a unique baby gift. Softcover book, but seems sturdy, beautiful colors and print. Arrived undamaged.

Best ASL book I’ve found!
This book is great! I can see that it is going to be an essential book in my library. I like how explains what level your child should be at in terms of talking and ASL, and how and what you can expect with sign. This book is broken up into categories and it shows how to do signs, and then has a review of the signs end of the chapter. It is easy to read and refer back to. I like the spiral binding, as I can open it up easily to refer to the different sections. The only complaint I have is that the spiral binding cuts into the front and back cover. But as it doesn’t cut into the inside pages. I have 2yo and 8mo granddaughters. My 2yo has already learned basic sign, but is ready to learn more. Her sister is coming up right behind her! 2yo is delayed in her speech due to tongue tie that was cut at 18mo. So, she’s playing catch-up. ASL has made a HUGE difference in her ability to communicate. Buy this book!!!! I will be buying another copyfor their parents.
