Can I Tell You about Autism?: A Guide for Friends, Family and Professionals

Finally! A book for all kids that explains autism!
I have searched through I don't know HOW many kids books looking for one like this. Can I tell you about Autism? talks about what it's like to be autistic in a kid friendly way - but here's the thing that sets it apart - in a way that acknowledges that not every child is like that! Most other autism related books talk about things very specific to one child - and make it sound like all autistic people are that way. It's frustrating, and I'm so glad I finally found one that doesn't! This one does have specific examples, but makes sure to say that not all kids have that same experience. I'll be loaning this to other families to use as they explain autism to their kids on the spectrum. The parent's section at the end with advice is pretty great, too - I love how they teach parents to use visual schedules and social stories! :) But to be honest, I'd buy it for the kids section alone. The only thing I would have liked is if there were something in the kid's section about the strengths of autistic people, to have something to make the kids feel positive about who they are. I'll have to buy a supplementary book to do that. This book is for a somewhat older crowd, I'd say best for ages 7 and up, but if you're looking a book for younger kids I'd recommend "Autism Is...?" which also explains autism in a general way most all kids on the spectrum can relate to. That book has the added bonus of talking about strengths for kids on the spectrum, which is great!

I got this to help me better understand autism
I am a youth and children's minister with a couple of children with autism involved in the church. I got this to help me better understand autism, but also help invite other children to read it to help them better understand the children with autism at the church (and just life in general). This book puts important elements in easy to understand ways and would be a great resource for anyone. I love the way to book is broken down into specific topics, making it an easy thing to read pieces of as I need a refresher. I especially appreciate the resources in the back of the book. This is a great book for adults and children.

Helpful
Helpful. It couldn't really keep my attention but its only because I was looking for something different and almost nothing can keep my attention.

good simple guide
A good intro to autism for those unfamiliar with the syndrome. Kid friendly and could be beneficial to share with kids that have a classmate with autism.

This is a really good book. But please
This is a really good book. But please, for the love of pete, could someone write one of these asperger or autism books with a GIRL as the main focus? It's great that these books exist, but it would be nice if there was one with a girl so that girls on the spectrum and their friends/classmates could relate better. Ive read this one and a few others to some kids and they always ask why I'm reading a book about boys to them when it's my daughter that has autism.

If you have a child on the spectrum, you need this book
This is one of the ARC's I've read that I would love to purchase for my own library. I really liked the simple, straightforward format and how things just made sense as I was reading it. So many books on autism make my eyes glaze over in boredom, but this one perked me up and actually taught me a thing or two about how my son's brain processes things. Definitely recommended to anyone wanting to learn more about autism or to those with a child on the spectrum.

Fabulous read that resonates with adults as much as kids
Offers such a clear description of how those with ADHD view the world. Its not long but doesn't need to be. High impact.

Brilliant Book
I had tried to get a book from the library about this subject without success. When I saw this book I thought I would try it as my grandchild has autism. What a brilliant book. Very informative, I recommend it.

Enormous help with a complicated and sensitive situation
The whole idea of it being read by children. My 8 year old is going down the route of being diagnosed borderline Asperger, he read this himself & and was pulling traits he recognised in himself. It’s proven to be an enormous help in explaining a very difficult, complicated and sensitive situation.
