A great book and a fantastic collectible!
Strategy guides for games as straightforward as Duke Nukem 3D always seem sort of unnecessary, but if you are doing it... well hey, why not do a great job with it?That's what this book is, a fantastic Duke 3D collectible covering the first three episodes and the bonus fourth episode featured in the atomic edition. You get a great collection of 2D maps, one showing a completed game map and another one drawn in wireframe, full of arrows showing you where to find every item. You also get tables showing specifically where each secret is located and how to find them. The actual walkthrough for each mission is detailed, and the maps come with a line showing you the 'recommended path' through the level.I've aced Duke 3D years ago, and didn't find this guide that useful, but if you are looking to complete the game on the highest difficulty then it could be useful in finding secrets, especially if you don't want to leave the game to go online. If anything else, this book is a great little collectible for Duke 3D fans - it tops EVERY other strategy guide on the game. There's some confusion as to the number of pages - it's 396. Seriously, it says so on the last page of this book.

Sir Duke

a must-have for every Duke Nukem 3D player
In this excellent book, Jonathan Mendoza covers the basics of Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition, as well as guides the player through the entire game. The detailed steps, combined with Mendoza's sense of humor, make the strategies very easy to understand. The section for each level details all the secret areas, and also includes a table of all available weapons and power-ups. Each section also has two maps - one showing the recommended route and the other the locations of key items. But one downside is that the book a bit lacking in the multiplayer department. Deathmatch games are very popular in first-person shooters, yet the book only provides two short pages of generic tips. Level-specific strategies are not covered, and there is only one paragraph on co-op games. There are also a few errors (for example, the book says the player can hold 20 laser trip bombs when the actual limit is 10) and omissions in the guide, but most of them are fairly minor. That having been said, every Duke Nukem 3D player - n00b or pro - should have this book.-- TL;DR version --Pros: Over 400 pages of content; easy to read; hilarious walkthroughsCons: Some errors and omissions; very little coverage on multiplayer gamesBottom line: This official Duke Nukem 3D strategy guide is a must-read for anyone who plays the game.Final verdict: 4.3 stars (rounded down to four)
