Without using a ruler, somewhere between 6 and 7 inches.

Q: is it the same material quality as the masterpiece series?

It is not a masterpiece quality. It’s what they call “main-line” quality.

Q: I know it says 8 years and up, but do you think a 5 year old could figure this out?

I'll be honest and say it depends on the child. They are not made as durable as when I was a kid in the 80s. A lot more plastic, and very little metal, if none at all. If the little one is one who isn't rough with their toys like I was as a kid then I think it should be ok as at 5 the smaller pieces shouldn't be a choking hazard issue. If they are on the rougher side, it does have a possibility of breaking and unfortunately this is one of the more expensive ones cause it's larger. Just my opinion...I could be wrong but I like to be on the more cautious side and know how upsetting it could be if it breaks.
